Though have to say, we expected/suspected it all along

Exposed: The big Railway Tatkal ticket scam - India News - IBNLive

When IBN7 probed further, it found that the touts used the internet to book tickets in advance.

Agent: Our work will be done by the Internet.

IBN7: Okay.

Agent: Even if no one else can do bookings on the Internet, we will be able to. After all we invest nearly Rs 1 lakh a day on these bookings. We get a print-out at exactly 30 seconds before 8 am.

At around 8 am is when the IRCTC server hangs daily for around 4-5 minutes, which is when these touts book the tickets.

lol this is common practice which is know to all railway employees. My dad said about this long time ago. i even wrote a written complaint and dropped it in the box near the ticket Q. But no action has been taken

Did that once when going from Delhi to Mumbai. Ticket cost me around Rs1400 (don't remember which class but I'm sure I had a bed).Next time it happened, I found it easier/cheaper just to bribe a railway employee directly at the train itself once when I had missed an earlier train leaving from Mumbai to... Surat I think - wasn't significantly more expensive than the original ticket, maybe 25-50% or so... at that time I had booked all of my tickets around a month or 2 in advance.

Railway Ministry acts after Tatkal ticket scam expose - India News - IBNLive

The IRCTC has reportedly also added 52 servers and plans to add 18 more. However, it feels that scaling up won't help.

Another option is that if the bandwidth is increased, then tickets will be booked in first half-an-hour when the counters open at 8 am.

Meanwhile, authorised agents have been denied access to Tatkal booking both through Internet as well as computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters between 8 and 10 am.

Ticket scam: Indian Railway likely to scrap Tatkal scheme - India News - IBNLive

One key suggestion is that the Tatkal system itself be scrapped and an emergency quota be implemented. A passenger seeking reservation under this quota will have to furnish valid reason for the travel.

Another proposal is that an identification proof should be made mandatory for any person making the Tatkal reservation. Earlier the ID proof had to be furnished only by the person travelling with the ticket.

Proposals like scrapping the Tatkal ticket sales at counters and allowing only e-reservations and changing the timings for the Tatkal ticket booking to avoid overlap with booking times for normal tickets are also under consideration.

The Earlier CNN-IBN Report said these guys are able to hack into the systems and generate upto 12 tickets before 8 AM.They should tighten their infrastructure and also have a bigger server pool which can handle the traffic spike.

i understand that it might not be logical but they should have been using something like amazon web services. i understand relying on AWS would add lag to the service but at least they would have all the resources in the world to handle the load. not sure how much it costs them to run their own servers for the service. aws could be considerably cheaper (or expensive) depending upon how they do business.

I think.. they are not hacking in the server.. I think they are receiving some help form some guys sitting at the server end. One of my colleague from office (whose father and brother are in railways) told me that some guys at CRIS‎ (Centre for Railway information systems) are able to do that and they too charge some fees for that. I did not want to believe her but then her family is in Railways! But then I am not entirely sure if that is technically possible.. There was another reason why I did not believe her is that last I heard TCS was hosting and maintaining the IRCTC servers. If that is correct then I guess TCS is involved in this too....Earlier only govt and ministers were the only targets of sting operations. Now-a-days we are seeing corporates being exposed too.. (read: Nira radia .. ratan tata :p). I hope the news channel investigates this further..webservices were banned by IRCTC sometime back when they banned the agent login from 8AM to 10 AM.. Cleartrop and makemytip use web services too if i am not wrong.. and one cannot book tickets from 8 am to 10 am using these websites too.
