Need a new laptop. I'd primarily be using it for running cad applications, and the usual stuff (browsing, ms office, hd media et al, no gaming). Budget is around 60k at the upper limit.Regardsx720

Go for HP ultrabooks

Build quality is good. Unlike HP, they don't overheat. Friend has one. No idea about their after sales service though.

Have been using Dell Inspiron 1525 from approx 5yrs now. Had issues with display and overheating problem but it was rectified at my home with just a phone call. In both the issues it took just 3 days for resolving my issues. Dell after sales service is awsome, I would recommend you going for it.

when was the last time you dealt with Dell customer care? i assume the laptop had a three year warranty at max. dell home support in india was fine till a year or two ago. it has been painful in the recent times. i have an old inspiron 1520 model lying with me. suffered multiple problems. were fixed in time of course. but this is like 2-3 years ago.

i have suffered my own share of problems with their displays. they replaced them fine but with refurbished units in crappier shape than original. and i had to deal with their US team to get their indian team to do the right thing (stop sending me defective products without testing them first). indian team kept on sending me defective replacements. dell usa forced them to send a new unit as a replacement. sadly even that developed issues within a couple of days.

samuel has his own share of problems with a dell laptop these days.

that is the thing. i have bought Dell laptops for two cousins and a friend based on my experiences. and today i feel bad for them because they are stuck with poor quality hardware with support as bad as any other company in the country. good thing is that all of them are light users of the laptop and are unlikely to face major issues with the product as i did.actually a friend already has issues with his dell xps. keyboard quality was horrible. almost 5 of the keys have broken away. dell would not fix it calling it a hardware abuse problem not covered under warranty. his official machine is a thinkpad from lenovo. i guess you can understand how stupid that looks like. Lenovo Thinkpads can take abuse. Dell laptops are a fragile piece of shit in comparison (the consumer models at least... inspiron have horrible build quality... i hear latitude and vostro are much better).

they are generally expensive compared to similar specced machines from competitors. build quality is rock solid though they are usually not the best looking devices out there.thinkpads i have never seen with regular consumers. only corporate people use them generally. they are preferred over other machines by businesses. 😕
