Hi Everybody, I was wondering if anybody here is interested in having a detailed overview of Indian Internet Scenario. Normal things like ISPs present in an area, pricing, plans available and technical things like avg hop distance from major sites, avg latency to various game servers etc. In brief a net map which can provide such information at a single point rather than at different forum topics. Any ideas , suggestions , technical input , rants are welcome.

umm. try making it easier for people to submit their information. like posting a list of questions for them to answer!

Ok. Basically the idea is to have a very lightweight application which runs continuously on the user computer. At the installation time it will ask user things like Name of ISP, Location of the User etc. And it will start gathering data by pinging and tracerouting major sites. This data will be gathered, analysed and displayed at a single location. For eg. Internet Traffic Report

Many questions arises now :-

1) Are users comfortable with such tool running on their computer which gathers data and send them ?

2) What kind of statistics we can gather to help us understand the network ?

3) Any such project(indian) already underway ?

4) How much money and effort is it going to take to build something like this ? Has anybody here worked on something like this ?

Any input regarding the feasibility , usability and complexity of this project is welcomed.

eh? This isn't of any use by putting it on every user's computer. The routers installed by the ISPs do all of this which you have mentioned. It's called routing tables.

It seems i am unable to put the right question. Now let me try it the other way.Is there any way which can help us to find out :-1) Number of customers a particular ISP have ?2) Citywise distribution of ISP and areas covered ?3) What routes are taken by the traffic from endusers to the sites and its hop distance?4) Avg.time to reach gaming servers.I hope this clarifies something.

a wikiISP.co.in? nice idea!create a blog and add team members from different isp's who are intersted in this idea...count me out! 🙁easyiest way i can think of!

Ohh... how did i miss this thread :S!

Its a nice idea, but looking at how the infrastructure and the way the fibres have been layed out in the country especially mumbai where there is still monopoly and stuff, i doubt if this info can be gathered.

I suggest we must have a Internet Map of india which shows all POPs (point of Presence) of all Sonet Rings(622MBps); GE and FE (Fast Ethernet) Connectivities because ISP's generally use FE connections from Bandwidth providers like Flag/Teleglobe/Internap/Cogent Co/Abovenet/Telia Sonera/MCI/UUNET/Verio NTT/Level3 . I Remember Internap still doesnt have any bandwidth operations in india.Spectranet uses FlagtelTATA uses and recently bought TeleGlobe 6-7 months before.maybe you people also post some of other sequels.

Oh not a good idea infact. Our line are already congested and one rarely get the speed they promise specially on pvt ISP. Virus on the top of that already keep the assesing time high. Forget this idea of installing such software on every user computer. It will JAM the net atleast of that perticuler ISP if not all.
