hardware ~
the set top box provided by iptv guys is a sleek ut starcom box. its very light and is about twice the size of your modem but is thinner. the stb comes with a stand with which you can make it stand like a cpu.

the build quality screams 'made in china' but still it is better than the quality of 300r2u modem that ut starcom makes.

the stb is basically a router which dials a connection in bridge mode which is configured on you modem by iptv ppl ... so as the connection you use for internet and iptv are seprate there is no risk of the data being used for iptv being counted in your internet usage.

the audio output is stereo so make sure your tv supports stereo input or you will have to buy a conversion jack on your own.

when iptv is first installed three values are entered
domain - iptv.com
username - ur phone no.
password - 12345678
(these settings are only entered once by the iptv)



software ~
the software on the iptv box is not great... infact its borderline crappy... looks like made by some old tv videogame programmer but the good thing about it is that even when it stops working you can just punch in the channel no. u want to see and it will take you to the channel.

the software is not fully developed .. and none of the program descriptions are entered.. although there is a provision for doing that.

as you can see on the left are the options for tv channels , tstv, vod... favorites remembers the playing position of the movies you have watched on vod, self help shows the services you have subscribed to and the account summary , there are a few games loaded.. but i will leave it for someone else to comment on them... the other options don't work

picture quality~
great on most channels... somewhat inferior on a few like ddsports and pix (but thats maybe bacause of the basic transmission quality)
the audio and video are out of sync for a second after you switch channels.. after that its perfect.
you can see a little distortion on the edges of things if the image is very dark...
the quality seems to improve a great deal after a few minutes of viewing a channel... (sometimes the quality becomes so good on some channels, discovery and star movies especially.. you start to wonder is this HD?)
but there are a few glitches... enter10 is one of the channels which shows some amount of skipping/flipping from time to time
otherwise i think the picture quality is very much dvd like and can surely give Tata Sky a run for its money


Time shift tv-

this is a feature unique to iptv .... you can watch programming upto 3 days old.
after selecting the channel you want to watch you just pause it and then you can enter the time you want to 'jump to'.. and after displaying 'jumping' for a second it starts playing the programming for that time.


the list of channels available on tstv has mostly sports channels, news and a few music channels like b4u and enter10



you cannot pause or rewind a channel from the main channel list... and even if the channel is available on tstv you won't be able to pause it unless you are playing it from the tstv menu.

the software sometimes just ceases to work and this is the message you see if you press the menu button

although the message says check your network connection.. that is not the reason...
although if you just unplug the network wire from the stb while watching tv .. the channel will just freeze to the last frame.. and a window will be displayed .. 'waiting for signal' when you plug the wire back the channel starts playing again


after this happens you can continue to watch the channel you were watching or manually enter the number for other channels ... but if you want to go to main menu for tstv or vod you wil have to hard boot the stb

UPDATE:..
dont go for iptv in delhi if you want 2mbps...
your speeds will be reduced to 256kbps if you take iptv in delhi...
(this info will be updated on mtnl's delhi site shortly)

the mumbai folks who are already getting 2mbps with iptv(even more in most cases) is dude to some issues which mtnl is facing there... but their speeds too will be limited to 256kbps in the future

how tarrif is charged?

I would like to know the brand and the model number of the stb they have installed? And, also what is the location of the page that displays the channel list?

Very well done indeed. By the way got a call yesterday night from the Aksh guys, they are (were) suppose to come at 5 pm today to install my connection. Would let you know once I get it if my experience is as good as that of Nish.

Nish by the way did you notice (if you see the tarrif chart on the MTNL delhi web page) that Time Shift is available for a flat fee of 30 rupees for only FTA channels and one has to pay 45 rupees each for each of the three bouquet of Zee Sony and Star on top of that 30 if one wants time shift on all channels which would take the bill pretty high. And according to your review at the moment it appears that only FTA channels are actually available on Time Shift, i don't think they would give us any meaningful channel on Time Shift for the the six months free period that we would have.Similarly pay per view rental is free for 6 months but one needs to pay for each movie that one sees I guess depending on the type of movie and for the premium stuff they us to pay almost 200 rupees for each movie.Also as we all know we can use this service only on one tv for the time being and given the bandwidth problems I dont know if they would offer it for more than one tv in the future. So I see lot of problems for IPTV, unless things change for the better in the future

the tariff chart on mtnl's website is grossly inaccurate... in delhi the billing system has not even been implemented... they are right now only working on increasing the number of channels, hammering out all the problems with their system, and also increasing the number of subscribers....there is no 'rent' for vod (and would probably never be). for the next 6months you can watch any number of movies any number of times .. and you will not be charged for them. i don't know on what basis they have decided the list of channels on tstv... and its not like they have given all the fta channels cuz then mtv and starone would have been on the list(but agree atm there are no pay channels available on tstv)and yes your bill will get quite heavy if you decide to load up all the services and channels on iptv after the promotional scheme
