I just started using Prepaid 3g on my MTNL Sim(bought it 1 yr ago but never used it until this Wednesday). According to Speedtest app, I am getting only 0.5 mbps speeds on 3g. I am from Mumbai and I get all bars on my mobile. I have tried from multiple locations incl. standing on the street and get only this much speed. Do I have to dial/sms some number to get more speed? I see only 'H' when connected to 3g data connection. I also got my sim replaced today with not much change other than I get connection more often than on the older sim but speed is still and issue.
Do you guys see 'H+' when using mtnl 3g on ur mobile? What could be the reason for .5 mbps speeds on 3g mtnl?

Have you tested speed near an exchange? Some areas in Mumbai are congested. Where all have you tried?

I get around 1.8-2mbps around Chembur.

H is the highest you can get. No special activations.

I have tried @borivali. I get all 5 bars on my mobile. I have vodafone also and was working perfectly fine in the same mobile giving good speeds in the same location. Did not try near the exchange as I dont live near it. But with full signal, such low speeds are unexplained.

Hard to say anything apart from localized network congestion.

Complain via pgportal if you're really keen on getting it sorted. As long as you're polite and have the patience, mtnl chaps will prolly be pretty helpful in solving the issue.

ok I will complain via 1503 but can someone confirm if 0.55 mbps is the speeds you get on ur mobile with all bars full and using speedtest android app?

It doesn't matter. If you're getting poor speeds only on mtnl sim on your phone, that's prolly enough. Test in another phone if you want to be sure.

Download something from the play store and check the speeds in real time. Use the network monitor app.

Stay away from 1503 for this. Either complain via form in my signature or via pgportal. RF technical team will contact you and prolly set up a field visit.

Borivali had good speeds...at least I get around 1.5-2Mbps..
See if you can resolve using portal

complained via pgportal. Lets see if I get advertised 3-4 mbps on MTNL 3G else I will close this SIM. I get no connectivity on the SIM at all anyways when I am in my office in Vikroli so no point keeping it alive if I dont get good 3G also.

Complained via pgportal. after some followups, 1 Tower technician came to my house to check the speeds and agreed the speeds are damn low, around 10-15 KBps via speedtest.net app. He claims that however problem is that the tower might be overloaded. I told him that how can it be only my tower is overloaded that too any time of the day coz I have tested the connectivity on multiple time of the day even 11 pm, 1 am, 5 am etc? He acknowledged the problem is there but only technical team can look into it as he is just a tower maintenance person. He told he will push ahead to that team. After that no calls or followups. Such is the pathetic state of affairs in MTNL. My SIM expires on 11th Jan and looking at no future to get good connectivity on MTNL, I have decided to not recharge further and let it dies a natural death. Will continue with my vodafone connection only although it is slightly costly. Bad MTNL.

Mtnl now allows 60 users at time than 40. This was told to Socrates (An IBF Member) by a Dgm at a Prabhadevi.
