Hello fellow members

I am a subscriber of MTNL (Delhi) having a 1Mbps connection. My problem is for the last 4-6 weeks I am getting very slow downloading speed. its like 10-20 and at max 40. Although, the speedtest shows the speed as approx. 1.7 Mb/s https://www.speedtest.net

I have already visited the Area Manager and DGM and and they have changed the telephone line and the pair as well. Yet, am unable to get the speed which I should be getting. These people have failed to figure out the problem as they have suggested that every thing is fine from their end.....

The downstream and upstream is

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin :25.0 11.0 db

Line Attenuation :19.0 11.5 db

Data Rate :2080 512 kbps

The modem that I am using is SAM300AX Sterlite

Dear members I would like to know what could be the reason for the slow download speed. Please Help me :icry:

Are you sure there is nothing that is choking ur line? Like background download OR virus.ur SNR margin and data rate are good..there is no reason u wud get slow speed.ummm.. try using Linux Live CD

Dear amishThere is no virus or background d/l in the system as per my knowledge. The OS is XP Professional Service Pack 3

Well, speedtest is showing proper speeds (upload as well as download). So there must be something related to OS / browser. It wud be best to check the same using Linux

where are u getting 40 kb etc ? if torrents i guess u know it depends try to download something from Microsoft site and see if speed is still slow.

Your snr & attenuation are good. Which DNS are you using? Is it MTNL, if so which one there has been some changes as per MTNL newsletter but I am not sure if its temporary or permenant, check out the wiki of this site for the new DNS of MTNL. I have also mentioned it in some post in the recent past. Also try OpenDNS & see if it makes a difference. Another reason could be the MTU in your modem. More about MTU can be found elsewhere on this forum.

I am getting the mentioned speed even when I am updating the anti-virus or other software on the system. Any file host site showing the same speed @ 40kbps Maximum.

The DNS I am using is of MTNL. Thats all I can say as for now. I am a novice as far as all this is concerned. The DNS is the same as provided by MTNL at the time of installation.

Sir, how can I open the DNS? As for MTU I'll check out the forum for that and DNS wiki. Thanks for replying.

Thanks socrates sir for the link. I did as told in the blog and put in OPEN DNS

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
208.67.220.222
208.67.222.220

but I am still getting the same slow speed. 🙁

p.s Do I have to reboot the system after changing the DNS?

Check out Socrates on how to check/change your DNS settings. It was written for a laptop but its similar for a desktop with XP

get yurself a firewall to see if their is outgoing connections when yu are not using the net .

I am using a comodo firewall. And when I turn off my net connection there are no outbound connections but when I switch it on it is showing 30 outbound connections at the moment

Good DNS, how good or fast it may be, does not increase SPEED. It just takes few miliseconds less for page request to be sent otherwise it wont even increase speed from 40kbps to even 41kbps forget expecting 1mbps 😀
