Hi,
OK, I was wondering --How does Sify broadband work?-- 😀

They have given the big picture here ofcourse sify
But what about the details.

Like for eg. I live in an apartment complex. I came to hear that there's a hub on some khamba (pole) right outside the apartment gate. Does it mean that, that hub serves only the people in my apartment complex?

And where is the Subscriber unit then that's supposed to be on every roof. There certainly isn't any on my building's roof lol, not that many customers here. So my guess is 1 SU is futher divided into sub networks through hubs , atleast in my case.

And what about the computers that are seen on clicking on the Network Neighbourhood icon? Are they the ones behind my hub too? *ponders*

Here's hoping a discussion that would bring about a White Paper on how Sify broadband works 😉
 
well my guess is that its a WAN that has a central server at CTO's office.
 
oh, by the way i was wondering if any one knows of a way to see the other computers in the network neighborhood while still running a firewall
 
the best thing in sify is the WAN , now i can play games with my friends on LAN.and also copy files from the comps which are not "firewalled" like the ones in internet cafesi downloaded more from LAN than the net(cant bcoz of frequent disconnection)BBCLIENT s*ckS!
 
hmm, is it a WAN or a LAN. They say a WAN is a network spread across very large distances, like a whole city or many states.And,what's that 😱. You can play LAN games thru sify!!! This looks like a solid advantage 😀 So we can play multiplayer games like Quake etc on the Sify LAN .
 

i think its WAN , i hav a friend of mine connected to the same network who is about 6km away(that can be called as WAN isnt it)didnt try quake , but tried NFS5U r not utilizing SIFY wellanyways there is nothing to utilize in the net part
 
i dont know anyone on my network. its more of an retired uncles colony who have kids abroad. 🙁
 
lol.. i downloaded 5 full movies and lots of movies + nfs underground ( 😛 ) from comps that were not firewalled.. just didn't mention it here fearing a tongue lashing 🤔 and i think sify is a MAN 🤔 .. and you can play games across any network as also with sify
 
It's not a MAN. It's a LAN under one Subscriber unit. So all the customers within your CTO's network are like on a local LAN. While this is an advantage to do things like "play network games" it is a disadvantage as far as security is concerened. One PC on the LAN infected with a virus or worm can slow down the whole CTO segment by choking bandwidth. Which I think is the reason why Sify gives that free anti-virus. Else an ISP will not care if your PC is infected with any virus 🙂. In their standard installation, te CTO is also supposed to run a gateway antivirus to contrain the viruses if any to only his Segment/Network. BTW, this feature/problem is unique to only the Sify implementation as of today. This does not apply to a DSL Broadband Network.
 
i dont think the networked comps hav the same CTO , but all of the having the same gateway are networked(I THINK, not sure) , that will be one part of the city or the whole city can any bangaloreans tell me their gateway(TO CHECK)
 
maybe he wanted to ask, how does it manage to work with such glaring flaws and crappy operators. 😉
