The modem is Huaweri MT 882. There are five lights: the power light which is always on, the link light which shows when the modem has connected, the ACT light which blinks when there is data transfer, the Lan light which is how I connect to the modem and which is always on but orange colour, and the USB light which also blinks during data transfer even though I have not connected through USB.I've been facing an unstable connection since yesterday, where the connection drops every two minutes. Today I'd connected but there was no data transfer so I thought that I'd disconnect and reconnect, but even after I disconnected, I found that the ACT and USB lights were still blinking. The USB light stopped blinking after a few seconds but the ACT light continued as if I was still using the net.Can this happen because of malware? Is it possible for data transfer to continue after I've manually disconnected from within Windows?

if the usb lights blinks even when usb is not connected then ur modem is faulty. get it checked first.

The USB light has been blinking like this from the very beginning.
Some modems are set in such a way that once you switch them on, they automatically connect so you can start using the Internet. But you can set your modem so that from within Windows, you can enter the username and password and manually connect and disconnect without switching the modem on or off. That is how I connect.

yeah in tht case some malware are capable of dialing the default connection. but since u say usb keeps blinking without u even using the usb port then its got to be a modem rpoblem. to check if data is being transfered download a bandwidth monitoring tool. it will show u if data is being transferred. there are many on the net for free.

After disconnecting, when I saw the lights blinking, I clicked the BSNL connect icon and it showed the regular dialog box with the connect button, not the other dialog box where you are already connected and have an option to disconnect. So the data transfer (if it was that) was happening without any connection. I have Nod32 which I update daily, and my firewall at this point showed that there was no active program using the Internet.
