when i created a id on the new selfcare portal i too got an error saying the account number is not valid. what i did was used the feedback option on top to raise my issue and after a few days when i tried to make the id again the problem got solved.
try contacting the customer care, they might help you. yes sometimes the solutions they give wont work. try again till a new person pick up the phone and see if it get resolved. you could also consider going to the nearest exchange to see if they could be of some help. usually they direct us to call the toll free number. but make it a try,.
