I have been using BSNL 3g 7.2 mbps card since 11th November now and have changed my location from Baroda to Surat to Baroda now. At Surat maximum stable speed I get is 250 kbps which goes to 310-320 kbps as well but for a second or two ( utorrent ). But thats justified as I just get 2 and sometimes 3 bars when I am at my place at Surat. Now when I am at Baroda, BSNL tower is hardly 400 meters from my place and I get full 5 bars all the time, but unfortunately, I get same speed no matter what and from where I download. Is there something wrong with my computer? Or is the speed capped at 250 kbps? Or its that this BSNL 7.2 mbps modem actually sucks to the bottom?PS. I download from private trackers with loads of seeders.

I think they do cap the maximum speed. My speed never goes above 2Mbps.

Yup, on speed test although I get between 2.1 to 3.1 mbps ( 2.1 mbps 90% of the time ), my average download speed never goes above 245-250 kbps.

Yes bsnl 3g is now only have 3.6 mbps so you cant get more than it even if you stand on bsnl tower

don't judge your bandwidth through torrent speed. seeders can cap their upload speed.

do a speed test or download a file with reasonable size using a download accelerator.

Where did that come from? hehe.

I have reliance broadband 2mbps ultd connection and I get 265 kbps download speed, so I guess with this 3.6 mbps connection I should get atleast 450 kbps download speed now that I get 5 full bars.

you are right if you use idm or any other accelerator you can get near about 400 kbps i m getting that , but you should check your dBm it will help you

I tried speed test and get between 2.1-2.6 mbps download speed now. Also I read that unless torrents are heavily seeded its quite difficult to max out, so I downloaded files from Cnet, MS and a few other websites, but still it shows the same result.

How to check dBm?

How to check dBm?
check with help of mdma you can get it @ nerve.org.za/mdma/

As you are getting 5 bars, you should be within -87dBm. That's quite enough.. the max speed depends the number of concurrent users and the the equipments used by BSNL. Please check at the BSNL exchange about the 3G bandwidth they are providing. Eariler, it was 3.6Mbps but they are in process of upgrading it to 7.2Mbps. This bandwidth will be shared by a specified number of users as decided by BSNL. This is common for most of the internet providers. So even if you are connected with the top speed of 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps, attaining the full bandwidth is very difficult. Please see if there is any improvement in speed during off-peak hours.

Adding to what I've said above, I don't think BSNL has capped the speed (at least in Bangalore). I'm very satisfied with the speed I get.

Lol i have also 5 bars but some place i get 95 dBm with 5 bars and other place i get 87 dBm with 5 bars so i suggest him ok ? and 7.2 is not updated every where its only in Bangalore he should get atleast 350 kbps .

In my observation, Huawei Mobile Connect shows 5 bars when you have at least -87dBm.

As I said earlier, the bandwidth (3.6 or 7.2) is shared by a number of people. That's what is called as Contention Ratio.
For BSNL Broadband, they have mentioned it on their website. It's 1:25. This means that the same bandwidth would be shared by max 25 customers. But it's not disclosed for BSNL 3G on their website. If the number of users are less, you'll get good speed. If the number of users are more, the speed will be less. Attaining the full bandwidth is possible only if you are the only active user when online.

Read this guideline by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India): http://www.trai.gov.in/WriteReadData/trai/upload/ConsultationPapers/167/bsnl.pdf

i think bsnl started to play tricks. I have been getting 300 kbps on torrents and 100-150kbps on downloads but for the past 3 days,, it remains 70kbps on toreent and 40kbps on downloads. the signal strength is 93% on a Huawei 1550 modem. I feel terrible.

I guess mac302i is correct in this matter, the speed is distributed among various people.

I often found that when somebody refer to speed mention perticular torrent speed. Torrent speed is not at all a measure of internet speed. Torrents are relied on Peer-To-Peer technology. That means it downloads from different computers under that torrent. Different users config to limit their upload speed. And many other issues reduce the speed.

Moreover if you download directly from any server, download speed heavily depends on the load of the server at that instant. Further how this site is configed (servers have different price tag for different plan and accordingly allow slots for different site).

If you really interested to test your internet speed do it from a clean safe Intel site.
