Hello guys, Need some advice on selecting a DTH connection. I pay around 200 bucks for 80 channels on cable. (ignoring DD channels). Am planning to buy a DTH connection.I am a south user - Family see Tamil, telugu channels and me see sports.Which one should i go for Airtel or Tata Sky or reliance?or shall i stick to my grainy cable tv.

If you want HD, you can go DTH. I am assuming you have a STB with Cable? If so, shouldnt be grainy, I think.

Don't buy Airtel. Their customer support is bad and website doesn't work when you try to recharge your account online or when you are trying to opt for add-on packs or discontinue add-on packs. They subscribe you to add-on packs without asking you and you end up paying for channels you never watched. I am speaking from over 1 year experience with 2 connections that I have in my home and in my office.

TATA Sky is the best in service, content and features - TATA Sky Plus HD box is the cheapest in its category, but the month on month running cost is a bit expensive.

If you are changing from the cable operator for the experience - go with TATA Sky (Normal/HD/HD Plus - based upon your needs)

If you have any particular doubts/Questions - feel free to ask.

^ Tata Sky is definitely not the best in terms of content, particularly when the OP is looking for regional and sports channels. Your best bets are Dish TV and D2H in that order.

What do i do? I did browse this website. Now, i am not sure what to do?How is Videocon D2H and Dish?

I've been using Tata Sky (three connections) for the past 4 years and purchased a HD STB recently. I have a 42 inch Panasonic plasma TV and I can say that the Hi Def STB is just bloody awesome!! The colors are so vivid and clarity so mind boggling, you can see the pores on Katrina's skin!! Jeeez! And that's not a good thing, what?!! Hmmm...The disadvantage of seeing the world just as it is and in High Definition! Seeing the WC cricket is even better than being there! (Of course there's no need to count the little cracks and blades of grass on the pitch, but you can if you want to!). Other channels are also much clearer seeing it with an HDMI or component connection than a normal STB. In other words, TATA SKY HD is just AWESOME!! Go get it!!Hope that helps!Cheers!Mike.

which one is better Airtel dth or videocon D2H?

I dont know about support issues - I presume that you need to activate only once a year after that you dont need to call support unless your STB goes bad. rigt?

I am not sure about support issues - I guess if you get a good installation, you need to call support only once a year (for recharge) or if your STB goes bad.

Been using Airtel for more than a year. Its good.D2H Picture quality is not upto the standards.Airtel customer care is very average. In case you face issues you can mail nodal officer.

It all depends on you. From your first post, I believe you are looking for best value rather than best quality. I also feel your family needs for channels may be so diverse that any DTH would cost you far more than what you are currently paying. If you want digital TV at SD resolution, need many channels and don't want to pay too much for it, you must consider getting a STB from your cable operator too.I get my TV that way at Rs 225/-. If I had to get all those channels from any DTH it would have cost me a lot more. Not the best solution in terms of quality but VFM and no grainy picture as with the analog cable.

i dont have HD LCD TV. I have a Normal CRT TV.
Sorry, bud! You better go get one, pronto! I prefer plasma as compared to LCD because of better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks, better color accuracy and saturation and, better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images). But beware, a plasma runs on >250 watts. But with a little more energy consumption what you're getting to see far outweighs this disadvantage.

You don't know what you're missing! It's no use buying an HD STB and watching it on an SD TV. You'll find no difference. But I warn you that once you've experienced high definition whether on Tata Sky or Blue Ray, you'll never want to see standard definition content again!! I mean it's a different world altogether!

But yes, as some posters have mentioned, there's not enough true HD content on TV as yet. Dish TV claims 30 HD channels. That's a lot of hot air because most of these are just up sampled and NOT true HD. National Geographic HD, Discovery HD, ESPN HD and Star Sports HD are in true HD format. So was DD sports for the Commonwealth games.

So let's hope we get some more HD broadcasts in the near future. In the meanwhile, enjoy Blue Ray on your plasma! It'll just blow you away!

Cheers!
mike.
