NEW DELHI: The government proposes to offer free, high-speed broadband connectivity to all Indians by 2009, through state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL.

While consumers will cheer it, the move holds the potential to kill the telecom business as we know it. You may have heard of free municipal broadband—many cities in the US have drenched themselves in wireless broadband connectivity, freely accessible to residents. The idea is to boost economic activity in general. The central government plans to achieve free broadband connectivity at a speed of 2 MB per second across the country, with a similar goal.

The Indian government "proposes" a lot of things. If this grandiose idea is actually put into practice (which it won't) and the government is the only ISP (yeah right!) there are some very scary implications esp. considering the extremely narrow mindsets of some of these clowns.

they give lectures so much first they give a truly unlimited 2mbps plan then they should talk about free connectivity

do you remember the dial up days where some companies offered free isp, i don't remember the exact name but it was like cheeco , even there was abig company which offered free isp , what happened shut down in few days,and about 2009, its a long time, the technology changes every day,whats important is the present, and free means something missing, not just broadband but other services like shopping , credit cards , under free scheme they try to fool the customer , never in life fall to such free gifts, or offers,.

ya,i myself doubt them .. in a country where there is scarcity of electricity even in the capital .and scarcity of drinking water they claim to provide 2mbps broadband for free.. fools they r

forget the whole country, i am living few km away from mumbai, even then we have 7 to 8 hrs of electricity cutout, and what are we going to do withfree broadband,.
