From MS help

To add a Windows XP computer to your network
You must be logged on to this computer as an administrator to complete this procedure.

Set up your new computer and physically connect it to your home or small office network.
Start the Network Setup Wizard.
If your network uses Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and the ICS host computer is running Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional, run the Network Setup Wizard on that computer first.

Follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Setup Wizard.
The Network Setup Wizard is only supported on computers running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows XP.

Theoretically speaking, this should suffice. But Windows is far from perfect so don't be surprised if you have problems. I had to mess around a little bit after running the wizard to enable file+printer+Internet sharing on my computers.

If u have a DSL router, then its really very easy. I did that a few days back. Its fast and easy. All u need is at least 2 ports on ur router/modem. And preferably both of them ethernet ports

i think a switch would work fine... we use a switch and we can move around data with regular lan cables.

i hv beetel 220bx modem and it has a usb and ethernet slot.....wt shud i do?

i have the same modem and i really do not think u can connect two machines with it. u can use the internet net 😛 upload and then download 😉

my frnd as a D-Link router with usb and ethernet ports on it.....he used his router as a switch for connecting 2 pcs....he connected 1 thru usb and other thru ethernet.bt i dont know the settings.

Connect both PCs to router and turn it on. Enable File/Printer sharing on both PCs. Turn off Firewalls on bothJust Run the network set up wizard on both PCs. The 1st Pc u run the wizard will ask u , do u want to run it on another PC. Select Yes, it will ask for an external media(like floppy,Usb drive) , save the file there. Now run this file on ur Second PC. U r done!I did it and it worked like a charm. The only difference was my router has 4 LAN ports and zero USB ports. So I connected both PCs to the LAN ports only.

Dats the difference between u and the original poster..U have 4 ethernet ports and he has only one ..with more than one LAN port or HUb..theres no prob@ Jason, U need a Hub..i dont think u cant connect USB port of router to 1 pc and ethernet port to other PC and use it for file sharing..Or if u dont wanna buy a hub, buy a crossover cable which can directly connect two LAN cards..Its quite easy to make one urself as well..

But why shudnt it work on router with one LAN port and another USB when it can work on one with a 2 LAN ports

but m8 wats d procedure after crossover cable?????????? i cant configure it pls hlp

Nothing much to it , if u have a cross-over cable just connect the lan cards of the two computers directly..thats it..
