Will techies and Gurus, will please explain fundas of e164.org and ENUM service to laymen like me. Has it got something to do with diverting your SIP calls to PSTN line.
ENUM is basically a service that lets the called party decided how the call should be routed to him and where he should receive it.Currently the PSTN setup runs like this -- whenever u call for eg a PSTN number in USA, the telco switch takes the call and routes it normally as a PSTN call to the called number in USA. With ENUM implemented the PSTN gateway or PABX ( which in our case wld be MTNL) would take the request and look up the ENUM data base for number being called. If the number exists in the database then the NAPTR record (a kind of new DNS record that allows a preferential record system) would respond with the preferences stored with it. For eg the person called might have given 1st preference that the call should be terminated on his softfone, the PSTN PABX would then directly call his softphone routing the call over internet instead of PSTN network.ENUM also has a facility of selective forwarding viz. if the softfone is not online then the PSTN gateway can call the second preference in the NAPTR record which could be the users mobile number..if even that is switched off..the call could finally be routed to the PSTN number..The same process would also apply when a user calls from his softphone or ATA with the VSP or software doing the ENUM lookups
