This problem which I am facing is not singular or isolated as after searching online I found that many people have reported this issue since 2012 on various handsets which includes Galaxy S3, S4 and even Nexus 4, Nexus 5.

I observed recently on my Canvas A1 Android One phone. Till last week I was able to install apps from Play Store. But from last few days while I was trying to update apps through WiFi, continously downloading bar was displayed. But app never got updated. Similarly while trying to install new app, same behavior was observed.

Many people online had suggested to clear cache and data for Play Store from Settings > Apps. But it did not work for me. Other suggestions were to delete Google account and add again, or factory reset which I don't wish to try, as I am waiting got Lollipop update after which I will anyways factory reset my phone, and hoping to get Lollipop update soon by Jan end 😛

I have not tried through mobile data as I don't have internet enabled on the sim which I use with A1, and mostly use internet on it through WiFi.

Any other (easy) solution for my issue?

Try clearing cache for Google Play Services as well 😛

Wow! that worked instantly. After clearing cache from Play Services (and Play Store as well again), when I tried to update apps, update started.
I guess some cache file was blocking update to happen.

These are the annoying things that keep on happening without a good reason. Majority of the issues connected to Google+ Auto Backup feature on the official help channel are solved through a similar reset of the Google+ app.
