Want to try it out and see if I can go old school. Anyone here use these? Any particular model recommendation? eBay has tons of cheap listings. Flipkart has tons of super expensive listings. Amazon just has eBooks. What to buy!

I abandoned ready made razors back in college.

You'll get a few cuts before you learn the technique of using double edge. Go for something that is heavy in weight because gravity works in favour.

I use both straight edge and double edge depending on the growth.

Yes, straight edge means ustara.

The classic ustara has a complete metal piece blade and is sharpened on a leather belt. Remember the aids scare in india in the mid 90s? That's when these original ustaras started fading away. Barbar shops replaced it with the now common design which accepts half disposable double edge blades. Classic straight edge is still produced in japan. You may also find one or two entrepreneur somewhere in the hindi heartland making these and exporting it to european markets.

The only place you'll find the current straight edge design razors is at the barber shop supply store. Ask your barber shop guy where he gets his supplies from. The first time I saw one, I thought I stumbled on a secret place lost in time. They had blades, creams and every sort of old and new school grooming gear you could imagine. Prices were wholesale too 🙂 Western folks on online grooming forums often spend hundreds of dollars sourcing out these old school gears which actually sell for around 50rs on these stores.

Straight edge costs just 30rs but it is a dangerous tool. The first few times, you WILL get cut bad.

For now, stick to practicing the double edge. Use 7 o clock blades(toughest steel blades in market) till you can budget down to the wilkinsons.

A benefit of using straight edge

I don't use double edge one yet, but I've one habit, whenever I get haircut and shaving done, I carry my own blade to shop.
reason the blades they use (topaz and other regulars), feels like a knife on skin, and if I had a week long beard, it hurts like anything.
So I started taking 7°clock platinum every time I visit barber shop.

Don't know buddy. I even doubt those cheap barber shop even get genuine Topaz ?
how many blades for Rs.180 ?
I think what I was talking about was 2-3 rupee each which shops use.
