I am looking to replace my Chevy Beat with a bigger car, preferably a hatch since it will only be used for City commuting mainly. My budget is around 6 lacs ex showroom. My running is about 1000kms/month but with Petrol prices so low, i don't think it warrants buying a diesel car. I guess my options in this budget are the Elite i20 Sportz, Swift ZXi, Polo Comfortline and Grand i10 Asta(O). I like the looks of the Polo the most, but the petrol engine seems very unrefined. Havent driven the new i20 yet but it has the same 1.2 Kappa engine which should be decent I guess(albeit a little underpowered for its weight). Swift probably has the best petrol engine in the bunch and should hold its value the best but I have heard far too many rattle complaints on it after a year or so. The rear is also quite claustrophobic. Grand i10 seems the best VFM car in the lot, but since my sister has one as well, I am keeping it as the last option.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Thanks in advance

Avoid Swift, Maruti build quality has gone to dogs. Test drive all cars within your budget and then decide. Take online reviews with a pinch of salt. Especially certain BHP forum. Lot's of fake/paid reviews around.

If you can wait, new Honda Jazz and Tata Bolt launching in next few months. Compact sedans also available at that price. If you are ok with CS, get Zest eyes closed. Service is a hit or miss most of the time, among all car manufacturers.

I drive a 2 year old diesel Manza. No rattling/other issues. Service has been good for me.

May I know where you live?. What are your priorities? Space/Power/Dynamics/Mileage/Maintenance cost?. If you answer theset better suggestion can be given. All the best.

I live in Delhi. I guess features and dynamics would be priorities for me. The Zest petrol doesnt seem to have very good reviews. The diesel version seems to be getting all the praise. I am a bit skeptical of tata developed engines. I was really looking forward to the Jazz but they keep delaying its launch.

If you do not need two airbags, I would suggest the awesome new i20. Though I am not sure what is the airbag policy in the i20... The model that fits in this budget has zero/one/two? i10 asta o and all variants of polo both have two front airbags to the best of my knowledge.

Decision is yours. Just drive Zest, i20 petrol, VW Polo petrol back to back once and buy the one you like.

Coming to Zest, Majority sales are petrol only. And Tata engine/other quality issues is a myth now. Nano engine was developed in house by Tata. Zero engine complaints. Revotron engine block is based on Indica Xeta engine, which itself was based on their truck diesel engines. Fairly simple one. Reliability is not an issue here.

It has one airbag, should be fine, since on the office commute etc. I am alone in the car.

😀 It is one good looking car. If I had waited till today, I would probably not have gone for the Grand myself.

Went to the Hyundai Showroom today. i20 looks good, through there is a 3-4 month waiting on all petrol variants.

It is the nearest VW showroom to my house 😀 but I am more inclined towards i20 anyways.

Booked the i20 Sportz today. 3 month waiting is what I have been told. Apparently the Pristine Blue colour is rarer. Could have gotten faster delivery if I chose white or grey.
