Now when we play a video downloaded off the net say in wmv or real  format or even a VCD, its usually in something 340x300 resolution or something. When we view it full screen, there is obvious pixelization. The VCD when played on a DVD player on TV looks much better/Now if I take a video out from my PC and connect it to TV, will the display be same as PC or better(coz TVs have low resolution....somthing of the order of 480x400). I am asking this bcoz I am comtemplating of buying a graphics card with TV out capability for the same reason. I hope I have been able to make my query clear enough.

man, that'd be around 8K of investment...i'd suggest u to go for an LCD screen (if u already don't have, which i think) with a cpl of extra K's...like i think u'll get a 19" LCD in under 10K...just find it out mate...if movie watching is ur main idea, then graphics card is not the best deal...

Nope dude I already have a 17" LCD monitor I bought for around 10,500 a few months agoAll I want to know is that if I connect my Video out of graphics card, will the quality of streaming video be better or worse than what I get on my monitor.

no idea about that...coz even i was trying to do that and i found out that it's a huge investment...so i opted for a 19" widescreen lcd monitor and am pretty happy with that... 😀but now i think a bit of more invetment would've got me a 21" LCD TV...it'd have been a much better deal as then i cud've watched both TV and PC on it 🤔

OMG !! ...a 19" monitor..that would be really awesome for gaming ....!!!!!!!.....

Ya dude, I experience this problems with VCDs and video that I record from my internal TV Tuner. In VCDs and these videos, I feel that the quality is low, and I see a pixelated video on my computer. But if I write the same to a CD, and play it in my DVD Player, The video quality is much much better. Maybe my graphic card is too poor 🙁 .

Tv's have low resolution (compared to pc's),so low res VCD's (of CIF resolution) are always gonna look better in Tv than in your 1280*1024/1440*900 Lcd..

Yep, but my point is if I take a video out from my Graphics card of a video which is of resolution of about 400x300 and play it on my TV, will it be better?

play games on my PS2 and 29" flat TV 😀

also, 19" widescreen is not that huge...it's just a bit wider...which is good for movie viewing 😀

I do this, but i have to reduce the laptop screen rez to 800x600, otherwise TV won't display the whole picture. DVD is 750(?)x480 so i'd say DVD rez is the max your tv can handle, ie more than 400x400.

Now its a question of which is the better playback device, the standalone DVD player or the laptop...hmm

Looks better with the DVD player because it might be applying some filters to make the pic look better. What if you tried to replicate this with VLC player etc. In theory you would have more flexibility selecting filters from VLC player on the PC than what's provided by the standalone DVD player. Of course you better have a powerful PC to do this, since the dvd player does it all in hardware.

I'd think you would be better off with a graphics card, only if you can find the right filters and actually see a difference.

It all depends on the quality of videos you have. if you have a lower quality video (anything lower than dvd quality like cam quality, vcd, low resolution vids) they will look much better on your tv since conventional crt tvs have lower resolution and lower resolution vids look good. infact lower res videos will look okay even on crt monitors--17 inch or 19 inch. listen the thing is crt are good at displaying all resolutions not just the native resolutions. So they can display a 720p or 480p or even lower res. videos equally well.On the other hand lcds can only display their native resolutions well.i.e if an lcd monitor has a native resolution of 720p then can only display that resolution well. So a lower quality video like vcd video will get pixalated and won't look good at all.Now those lower quality vids look bad on your monitor because you must be having an lcd monitor with 720 p display.it has nothing to do with your gfx card. if you use a gfx card to connect to your tv then these lower quality vids will look much better on your tv screen. Although since conventioanl 21-25 inch crt tvs have lower resolution than your monitor screen , higher quality vids like HD vids will look better on your lcd monitor than on crt tv. Also before you go and buy a gfx card make sure your tv has necessary imputs/outputs.

Just thought I'd put my two cents in. Just got a new graphics card (8600GT) and it has a S-video out. They also gave a s-video to component (RGB) adapter. My TV though a CRT (SDTV), has a component hookup.Long story short: The video is beautiful and above DVD quality. I use 576i (NTSC) and it really looks good.

All quality of a video depends on reolution and pixel size.

VHS resolution is about 300x360, whereas VCD resolution is 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL). Now on a 1280x1024 LCD monitor, this would be very dull.

For DVD video resolution is 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL). Thats why DVD looks doubly good on tv. Now DVD would look best on on 720×576 monitor. But if monitor is 1280x1024, this also fades.

Traditional TV is optimized for 625 line horizontal lines and 4:3 aspect ratio for PAL standards. This is what is used in India i think. VCD with 352 lines look average and DVD with 720 lines look very good on tv.The size of pixels is very large on a TV as compared to a monitor and become larger as size of tv increases. This greater pixel size ensures that tv screen is bigger than monitor even if it has less resolution. Resul is that you cannot view a 29 inch tv sitting one foot from it.

Above all the resolutions discussed above are interlaced. This means just divide every no. by two to get the orginal lines. A LCD montitor is not equipped best for interlaced video. And it has also very high resolution these days. So, video in VCD or even DVD doesnt look good on a LCD. thats why all world is talking HD. this is true video that can be displayed on a LCD. 720p or 1080p(progressive video means 720 or 1080 true lines and not interlaced) is best when displayed on LCD.

Also depends on the input. If u hook up ur TV to a video card, is the quality going to be as good as watching it on ur LCD monitor ?
