As far as mobility is concerned, expecting an internet connection to hold like one of a cellphone is prolly asking too much.[/b]

that is what exactly wimax is supposed to do. hold on to internet connection like a cellphone even on the move. where ever you travel in your city holding your laptop.

it is a step closer to a wireless world.

so, it means, to a desktop user WiMax is as good as DSL. not much difference.
but for a laptop user, he can stay connected everywhere.,

I say wired networks are better mostly in terms of speeds, its the exchange that determines how fast bits can be sent (assuming the isp allows it), Wimax has not made much of an impressoin in cities in the west or far east, since they can't really offer much in comparison to the what the wired networks do.

But in India, Wimax has the capability to do more. Ok, if you are a wired ISP and u see Wimax is offering more, all you do is upgrade your exchange and you have parity at a lower cost. Even if the cost to purchase bulk bandwidth is the same, between the 2 ISPs, over time, the wired ISP has the advantage.[/b]

Wired netwroks can offer better speeds. Not sure if it is even possible to get GBps level speed with Radio.

But even speed that is now possible on Radio is much better then what we get on wired networks in India.

I used Verizon data card in NY/NJ area and got ~1 mbps (they promised 2 mbps). It used to cost me $30 on some corporate plan. Not sure what tech it uses. And NY City is probably as crowded as it gets in most cities (maybe except Bombay). So if Radio can give 1 mbps speeds in NY, then it should tecnically be possible in quite a few cities.

/offtopic funny thing.. i had met a person from germany and he had come to visit india, specially bangalore. he told me that he had heard such a name of bangalore that he was expecting to find every person carrying a laptop and working on it sitting in a park. lol

There is so much hype about Bangalore in the west. People think it's something like Shanghai. The minute they touch down on the Bangalore intl airtport all the expectations are gone.

there is a hype about bangalore in west.. nearly a year back it was quoted by some foreign tech guru in times of india "in west people think that there is only one city in india, bangaloreand all the one billion people live there..!"may be he was funny.. but still

India is generally overhyped in the West. Its absolutely not ready for this kind of hype yet. Because of the economic boom, India is often compared to China - Which deserves its hype. But India is barely just one step ahead of other 3rd world developing countries like Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh etc in terms of Internet Technology.

- r u sure it's ahead of these?

Yes, thats why it the whole country was wihtout Internet access for a month when a single undersea cable turned turtle. It was even thinking of buying bandwith from India.Good days for guys in IT/ITES since that meant no work but full pay...
