Dlink 502t Ethernet Port Problem

The ethernet link is not detected when I connect to my IBM thinkpad laptop. The link lights on router as well as laptop are off. There seems to be an auto negotiation problem. If I force the speed of laptop NIC to 100Mbps or 10Mbps, the light on the modem comes on, but still lights on laptop link is off and the port doesn't come up. The NIC on laptop is Intel pro 1000 MT.The router ethernet link works fine with another PC. The laptop ethernet port also works with other devices. Please let me know if there are any solutions to this.
