Coraline is a horror novel, mainly intended for young readers. If you love the genre of horror, sinister settings, and an eerie atmosphere then Coraline is a novel that will interest you.

The protagonist of the story is Coraline, who moves into an old house with her parents. The house is divided into flats. Downstairs, there is a locked door in the drawing room which always appears kind of creepy to her. One day, in spite of warnings from her neighbours, she opens it and to her surprise finds out that there is a beautiful flat out there, where she finds her ‘other parents’ who have creepy black button eyes, but are nice to her. She likes them a lot in the beginning. However, when the other mother tells her that she wants her to be there forever, it scares Coraline and she runs to her own flat, only to discover that her parents have been trapped inside a mirror by the other mother. She even gets to know that the souls of three other children have also been imprisoned in a mirror, by the other mother.

And so, Coraline’s mission begins to rescue her mother and the souls of these three children from the clutches of the wicked other mother, and she only has a cat to help her in this deadly mission.

The film tie-in edition of Coraline was published by Bloomsbury Publishing India Private Limited in 2013, and it is available in paperback.

Key Features:
  • The novel has won a number of awards including the 2003 Hugo Award for Best Novella. the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novella, and the 2002 Bram Stoker Award for Best Work for Young Readers.
  • Some people have compared it to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
  • The novel was adopted into a stop-motion film bearing the same name.

I think I read the book and have also seen the movie.
