Purchasing ADSL modem

When I asked BSNL about purchasing the modem for Rs. 2000, they said Rs. 2204 is the price. I believe that is the +10.2% service tax. How can anyone charge a service tax on a product. It is supposed to be sales tax, according to me, which is already in the Rs. 2000. What the hell is Rs. 204 for?

Which brings me to this: does anyone (from Pune) know where to purchase ADSL2/2+ modems from? It would be better to purchase the modem UTStarcom UT-300R External Ethernet ADSL Modem rather than paying BSNL Rs. 100 a month, after Rs. 500 installation and Rs. 500 non-refundable (bull s***).

I searched on Ebay, but couldn't find anyone selling ADSL modems; stores sell only routers. Also, no one sells this particular modem.

I think BSNL claiming Rs. 2204 as the price for the modem might be true. As for the modem to choose, u are free to buy the modem from BSNL or urself from the open market. Don't go for rental scheme. You can get a decent ADSL Router for Rs. 2500 which is the D-Link 502T and I am using it without any problem. Also if you consider buying from BSNL, think about what would happen if the modem malfunctions or gets burnt-up ! No warranty/guarantee has been declared by BSNL till now. It is also not known when they would replace/repair, if there is a problem with it. D-Link has a large service centre network and thus u are assured. The UTStarcom modem supplied by BSNL is of rather cheap quality and make. So decide urself which way to go after reading my recommendations...

No you don't. D-Link DSL-502T integrates ADSL modem and router. However, if you want to share your broadband connection with other PCs on a network, I would like to suggest a Compex PS2208B switch (Rs.1100) if you have a wired network.If you are stuck technically on configuring the modem/router, just start a new topic in the BSNL-MTNL Broadband section.
