Thanks Imran. I have gone ahead and changed the password from MTNL side and in connection setup of modem/router. There was a glitch for about 15-20 minutes and I required a bit of restarting, but finally it is all working fine.

Now modem login password? Yes, can be hacked, but from where? Internet? or do you mean physical location? I thought account security was safe once password changed at http://register.mtnl.net.in. Or do you mean that they can hack it for getting to my PC?

I cannot get anything in 'My Network Places' other than my local PCs (I have a second NIC) so my setup seems ok?

I do wish somebody could sort of post a guide on the firewall / security settings. For normal browsing/e-mail, for games (there do seem to be some built in settings for some games), for audio/video, for p2p, etc. I seem to have the newer firmware and as a result, most of the guides I have seen have very different dialogs/screens/settings.

Going back to the topic of a data usage monitor, since DUMeter costs money, here's a free alternative - FreeMeter. Get it from here. Get the freemeter.exe file. But in order to run it you'd need to get Microsoft Dotnet 2.0 Framework from here

Thanks inetbum. I do not have any intention yet of installing .net. MTNL site seems better now and should be ok or get better (hopefully).I tried changing my modem password, everything goes ok, I save all changes and log out. But again it goes back to default. Firmware glitch? If anybody can explain how important this modem password is, after changing the MTNL a/c one, please let me know. Also, what to do if the PPPoE light goes out? Try and restart the modem? power on/off or through the modem control panel? Or just wait till it restores itself?

MTNL's site is always down for me nowadays, rarely up. So I at last convinced myself to even install dotnet for just this 1 app 😉You should restart the modem from its config page after changing its password (after changing anything for that matter) for the change to take effect. That's what I think.Modem password is important because the modem is a router too (a tiny computer) which sits between you and the internet. So anyone can hack into it too and from there hack your PC. So better to put a combination of letters, numbers and special characters (@#$ etc) as your password and disable remote connections to port 80 of your modem. The password which you changed from MTNL's site is your MTNL account login password. It's an MTNL server-side password and different from your modem password. You use your modem password to set up your modem and the MTNL password to access the internet and your user profile page.
