How did you measure your speed?

1.By speedtest available on net.....(this gives an total download speed).......try Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
2.I am a torrent downloader so it mentions your download speed...(actual download speed is shown).....hope i was helpful! 🙂
I did not ask you the question because I want to know how to test MY broadband speed. I wanted to know how YOU got the figure of 40kbps. Now your answer has made it more confusing. You have mentioned two ways of measuring speed which will give you very different results. a torrent client like utorrent will display speed in kBps(kilobytes per second) while speedtest displays in Mbps (megabits per second)
So which one is it?
If you got the speed you have stated using utorrents then you are getting exactly the speed you paid for. 40kBps x 8 = 320 kbps. Instead of cursing MTNL in every thread, you may have to open your wallet a bit wider and go for a higher speed if you need more.

dude u aint getting this....for the first month i got 250 kbps/sec ..now its cut down...while in other parts of mumbai its still 250 kbps/sec approx...well i was assured the same but now they hav cut down my speed drastically without a notice....thts wat annoyed me even more...torrent gives u the best way knowing ur download speed.....try it...and yes i hav a very slim wallet so i chose this so that i get good download speed at the chepest price....maybe u dont know those Govt. bastards thoroughly.... and yes i wont stop cursing them....good day! 🙂........[btw i checked my speed on utorrent 😀]

hey akshay, you're getting normal speed. I'm using sify broadband 256kbps plan and it only gives me 32KBps download speed which is totally normal, no matter what ISP you get.devide your speed with 8 and you get your download speed.

So finally you gave the answer to my question.
1. The speed you are getting is correct for the plan you have chosen.
2. MTNL has speeds upto 2 mbps for the data limited plans and that is what people get by default when they just start with MTNL.
3. After a while, the MTNL people who are responsible for setting the speed limit get the intimation about your connection and then they set your speed as per the plan you are under.
So my point is that you are getting what you are paying for. It is your good fortune that in the first month you were getting high speed far beyond what you were entitled to. But do you think that is reason enough for you to demand that speed forever?
Most people, including myself choose a plan good enough to do their work and to suit their pocket. So if we get what we pay for that should be fair enough. If we find that is not good enough for our needs, our option is to go for a more expensive plan.
Regarding your inability to reach CC at 1504, that is surprising. Though many of us here may not always be happy at the kind of response we get from 1504, I have not heard people complaining that they can never reach 1504.

Thanks i dint knw tht..anyways good luck with your new connection!....cheers! 🙂

No offense taken friend.
But I see that you still have a small misunderstanding. MTNL promised you 320 kbps (kilobits per second) and that is exactly what you have been getting. It gives you approximately 40 kilo bytes per second downloads. So MTNL did not lie to you.
Hathway will probably give you 512 kbps at about 500-600 per month. MTNL also has 512 kbps at 599.
I personally would not take Hathway mainly because it comes to you through your TV cable operator. I do not trust those guys.
I am not a MTNL fanboy. Tomorrow, if some ISP gives me what I want at a attractive price I will be the first to switch. But at the moment I believe it gives me the best value for money. And we all expect even better deals to come shortly. So stick on I say.
I had also switched to the 495 combo plan but was having erratic speed problems. I switched to 512 kbps but realized that there were problems with the MTNL line. The problems are now resolved and I might go back to my old plan since that speed is adequate except for torrents.
All the best with your connection.

buddy i have HATHWAY since last 3 and half years and it is NOT through the cable guys. they have seperate connection. HATHWAY has FUP of 10Gb on 512 kbps speed and it sucks. MTNL and cable internet dont have FUP
