I am located in Calcutta. From today afternoon I am unable to log in as the dialler reports Error 678 and that remote computer is not responding. My "Link" light is steady. Is anyone, particularly in Calcutta, experiencing this problem? Is the problem in my side or any of BSNL's facilities are not working?

Hulo.

Had already posted about this on Mar 12,2005:

Was getting "Error 678: Remote computer not responding" and even after pointing this out to the local CO engineer, they had no clue on what was the problem. Had to contact the Senior Divisional Engineer (SDE) incharge of DataOne before the problem was solved.

A card in the DSLAM in the local telephone exchange handling about 20 DataOne connections had somehow gone into blocking mode(due to bad admin?) and was not transferring data at all.

Some points to note:

1. If you get "Error: 678" it is most likely at the local CO dslam.

2. Even if the DSL line reports OK in the modem , and you get error 678, ask the local JTO to check the ports on the DSLAM.

3. Ask him to specifically check if the ports are in "fowarding state" or not.

4. the local guys are clueless. Ask to speak to the SDE or better yet to the GM-Broadband in your city, if you have a problem not solved within a day.

Thanks a lot. The problem persisted for almost one and a half day and was rectified after that. This is the first time it happened in since I started using the connection in Feb.

HuloDoes your line get disconnected every few minutes and you have redial again into the ADSL. The few minutes means anything from 3 minutes to 30 minutes.I suffer this problem and BSNL says they have programmed it to disconn after 20 minutes of idle time. I dont belive this shit of theirs. Yet to get it on b/w from them.

Yes, it does appear that connections get disconnected after a few minutes idle time. I have not measured it whether its 20 minutes or not. Sometimes, I think it happened in lesser idle time. There are softwares which send "keep alive" signals to the ISP to let them know if u are online. U can use those to remain connected. Most disconnections seem to be die to line problems though, caused by electrical disturbances, cordless phones, power lines, bunching of wires. etc.

Can you suggest few softwares which send "keep alive" signals to the ISP to let them know if u are online. I would love to get away from this headache of disconnection though I shall soon follow up BSNL so that they stop this disconnection thing and make it like DIAS where there is no disconnection at all.Till then I need a support from a s/w to keep me alive.

try a scheduled task to ping some server or something like that?

There must be some other reason for disconnection if it disconnects so frequently. Anyway, try these softwares. If these do not help, the disconnection is due to other problems in the line - Keep Alive Softwares

Also try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813827 and http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/891/ .
