apples and oragnes. V Day has a huge following worldwide. Wikipedia(i'm so honest I quote my sources) says it started in India in 1992 after CBSE assigned a Thomas Hardy book to the curriculum that involved V day and stuff... lol. That sounds pretty archaic in 2013, but I guess books were the #1 source of news 20 years ago compared to Google.
I don't see any retailers offering huge discounts on specific days here, but recently E-commerce websites had a Diwali shopping discounts sale, which could be considered our own Black friday. People over there bought stuff to celebrate and gift for christmas, we do for diwali, problems arise when someone asks for discounts for diwali in USA and christmas in India, though the latter sounds less weird as indians love aping the west and has been since Gandhi, and also India has a larger proportion of Christians compared to Hindus in Amerika.
Off topic but whatever, severely sleep deprived, time to unplug
EDIT : Great online shopping festival sounds interesting though.
A couple of Indian retail stores did offer Black Friday branded deals on their store. These stores do not really care about what the event is... They just need a name for a sale. GOSF is just an attempt by Google to create a yearly event so that they can benefit from their own shopping platform as well.
