Is Tata Sky Worth It ?

They say its dvd quality picture and cd quality sound ! But when viewed on High Definition LCD panels you can see that its not. In every showroom they show Tata Sky on these LCD panels. But why the hell are they fooling us. Why cant they decrease the compression ? Or do you guys feel that they are doing a good job?

dips you are expecting too many things from Tata Sky. Tatasky has only been around for 3 months so give it some time. High Definition thing is still atleast a couple of years away for us. The transition will be from CRTs to LCDs to HDTVs and the prices have to be reasonable for that to happen. I fail to understand why you people are so hooked onto this picture and sound quality thing. DTH's biggest advantage is that it bypasses the cablewallah and we will have no more channel blackouts and sudden rise in the subscription packages. From what i have read about persons who have got tatasky , the general consensus is that the picture and sound quality is better than cable so that itself is a massive thing.As dth grows they will have to improve their service in many ways and that includes moving towards high definition viewing.

In fact you would probably face the same or even more channel blackout/disruption in transmission given that many users are reporting that a little bit of rain or cloudiness really disrupts the signal. And there is nothing (except CAS?) that stops them from raising the price of the subscription packages as they should please. In fact with Cablewallahs, if they raise prices unreasonably, since they would be serving whole colonies, the people of these colonies would have more leverage to get together and protest.The picture and sound quality thing is an important one - IMHO given the existence of the technology we should make the jump straight from CRT to HDTV. But for that two essential factors are absent -1) technological understanding and a long term vision in terms of the people high up in the TV manufacturing and TV content industries.2) mainstream understanding and appreciation of technological quality. (Hell we still watch VCDs!)

Picture quality on 29 inch tv is amazing.... I have seen quality of dish tv on 29 inch and its somwht pixelite but on 21 inch tht look nice too...Can't say abt any any other tv size (more then tht of 29).... Picture quality of local cable operators is less said the better... Tata Sky certainly is worth the cost for me.... not even a single downtime in last 3 months...Nice software for STB.... I couldn't ask for more... They certainly have to add few more channels in near future to be in competition with dishtv... I am thinking abt buying one more STB so tht I can watch it on my pc too... Just hoping tht they drop STB price with introduction of CAS on 1st Jan...

i hate cable tv feed on my dad's 29 inch flat tv 🙁its all blurry.

I have Tata Sky and have no let downs and have had no problems for 3 months.

You answered the thing yourself.Now that we have alternatives , the DTH players would not be able to increase the prices unsubstantially. Besides if you think that the Rs 5 max for every channel is going to stay beyond one year than your are wrong. A year down it will be a level playing field when it comes to CAS , DTH and IPTV. So it will all come down to the quality of services offered and DTH being a much more organized entity would be miles ahead in that aspect.

The primary reason for increase in prices in pre CAS scenario was the under declarations of connections by operators which forced the MSO's to hike the rates. This simply won't be the case in a post CAS scenario and the pricing will be uniform.

Disagree on both the points. I'm sure corporates like Tata Sky and DishTV are capable of implementing the HD technology.Having a long term vision is fine but unless people decide to dump their CRTs it would be useless.

You fail to take into account the most important factor and that is the cost involved. It simply won't be economically feasible for people to buy HDTV's when they are so expensive even in the developed nations. The cost of implementing that technology will be gigantic and it would be a stupid move coz even by 2009 , atleast 75% of the homes in india will continue to have CRTs.

Dips I agree that the 'chalta hain, chala lo' attitude sucks but in this case can you honestly say the signal quality deprives you of viewing pleasure? Marketing spin is part of life and it certainly isn't an Indian invention. Once I get engrossed in a program I'm totally unconcerned whether the picture is 'good VCD quality' (which is how I'd rate Tata Sky) or 'DVD quality.' TSky, Dishnet, CAS - they're all pretty equal as far as picture quality goes, with TSky slightly better than the rest. What will matter in the long run is who provides the best content. Tata Sky seems to be the best placed in this respect but so far they have been a total letdown. Hopefully things will get better in a few months from now or else they're going to get dumped left, right and center. They will always be slightly more expensive than the rest, add to that potentially poor signals during rains - they better get their act in shape coz as long as we have the power to choose, whether they like it or not, we are the king.

Atleats 80% of homes will have HDTV's once the election campaign's are over.

I read on engadget or somewhere😀uring the election campaign politicians will be giving away free HDTV's in exchange for votes... So most people will be getting a new TV?
