Hi
Around a decade with Airtel (initially touchtel) it was time to move on. Was interested in FTTX (X=B,H...) but with non of the branded names in my area I had no option but to knock the doors of local cable wallah to get reliance / spectranet etc etc in the colony. To my surprise there is a local operator (based out of Bikaji Cama Palace) and presense in quite a few locations in NCR delhi called Geonet (http://www.geocity.co.in/coveredarea.html). Any reviews???
The person claims to run a backbone on fibre, has bandwith from multiple branded ISPs and gives a standard Ethernet connection over PPOE. plug in a normal router and you get a public IP (199.XXX.XXX.XXX Series (he did not tell me the complete series). Lastly with cable lines being broken stolen multiple times a year in my colony he offered me a air grid connectivity. He said it is enough for upto 10mbps line. He also offered something called nano bridge for speeds upto 25mbps
for those still interested:
- one time installation charges Rs. 1000 (said he would need to expand around 200 meters and will be installing a switch behind my building) so he is making investment and hence cant discount this, moreover this would be non refundable.
- air grid security deposit Rs. 500 (refuntable). would charge installation charges even if I take air grid as he claims airgrid costs him around Rs. 5000 and hence would need installation charges anyhow
- monthly charges including tax - Rs. 1K for 1mbps no FUP , Rs 1.1K for 2bmps for 25gb and then 1mbps unlimited.
- Other plans include 400kbps Rs. 560 , 512 kbps Rs.650, 8gb 2mbps post which 512kbps for Rs. 750
Since I am on a D-Link 2750U I would need to buy a normal WIFI router for which he is charge Rs. 1500 and is upfront saying It includes around Rs. 200 as his commission to bring and install the WIFI.
My Questions
1. Any one any review of this ISP. He claims to have 30K customers in and around Delhi
2. Any issues with Latency, Speeds, downtime
3. Any issues anticipated with the following services
3( a ) - VPN : I need to connect to office VPN which is powered by Aventail.
3( b ) - VOIP : I use a lot of Magic Jack, Vonage and likes for calling both from desktop, Apps installed on phone and devices
3( c ) - NAT / Remote initiated sessions - Read hosting gaming servers, adhoc FTP severs, Torrent Downloading
3( d ) - Google Cloud Print - I have 2 printers one is classic (attached to chrome on a machine to allow cloud print) and other directly connects to google cloud.
4. Any person who has idea of Air Grid, Nano Bridge ETC and can comment on these connectivity during rain, winds, etc....
5. Is 1 mbps enough for watching SD and/or HD streaming videos from Youtube/FB/vimeo etc.
I do not have any particular requirements, I usually consume around 22-24gb a month with normal surfing, app updates on various mobiles, Drop Box however I am not using my internet connection to potential because of post FUP 256kbps fears.
Ps. The ISP has a scheme of Rs. 50 a month discount for 8 months on refer a friend. Incase you plan to take this connection do give my reference. I am waiting for my installation which would happen next Saturday (damn office during weekdays) and I am planning to continue my airtel for another 2 months before I degrade my plan and then another 2-3 months before I disconnect completely (if I am satisfied with this ISP).
