Hey guys,
Need some urgent help with regards to MTNL 3G Prepaid card. After using a Tata Photon+ for nearly 2 years, decided to go for a new 3G connection. Chose MTNL because of the 50GB allowance. However, I am having major issue on both the Dongle and MTNL end. Here is the gist of things:
Before I begin, just to clarify, I am based in Thane (Around Cadbury Junction - if anyone is familiar with the area) and dont know whether MTNL has good 3G coverage around here.
MTNL Problems:
Bought the card on Wedneday. Thursday it got activated. Topped up the 99 Rupees coupon that I had received. Then did an e-recharge of the 50 GB for Rupees 1650. After 4 hours on Thursday evening, I switched my spare phone back on again, I was going to use this for a day as a hotspot since the data card had not arrived. However, could not connect to the internet. Called 1503, tried all the APN settings, still no luck. So left it at that.
Friday, I received my data card and since then, got another head ache.
Huawei E3121:
Installed my data card. Inserted the sim card and once it detected Dolphin, I got a Full Network Display and had 3G written next to it. Clicked on connect, but it failed.
Went into Network settings. Changed the APN to mtnl.net and left login details blank. Still the same error.
Then I tried to change the Network type from WCDMA ONLY to GSM Preferred. Applied. Still no luck with the connection.
Gave up, switched my phones Hotspot on and continued using my Vodafone as I had a lot of work at office. Got home (Thane - Majiwada) and opened Huawei Mobile Partner to have a look and sort it out. However, one big change I noticed as soon as I plugged the data card is that, it just stated the Network name: Dolphin. No 3G or the Network range.
Furthermore, the Network type options (WCDMA, GSM) are locked and dont open up. Cant choose my network manually as well.
So uninstalled the software and driver. Rebooted the laptop and tried again. It is still the same. Gave up on it. Got to office today morning and tried again. It is still the same. Software still has the same issues. Luckily, one of my friend visited my office today, he changed the settings of the Modem by putting an Extra Initialization Command: AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP", "mtnl.net"
He then made a manual connection and connected it. HURRAH, at last I thought, but that went poof quickly when the speed in the Mobile Partner was showing to be 6-10kbps down and 4-5 kbps up. Took almost 5-6 minutes to load google !
Took the sim out, put my spare AIRTEL sim in the data card. It didnt even show the Network name !
Tried the MTNL sim in my phone, still does not connect to the internet.
So now I have two problems, A) An MTNL Sim which I not only me, even the CC couldnt figure out why it is not working.
B) A Huawei E3121 Data Card, which is not showing Network Type options, not letting me select manual network, nor showing Network details at times and most of all, just does not connect.
I would really appreciate any help on this. Been quite frustrating and with my Tata Photon switched off and my work HEAVILY depending on net access, quite in rough waters. So really will appreciate any help.
Regards,
Sid.

WCDMA mode is for 3G if you keep it as GSM only you will get connected to EDGE speeds instead of 3G.
Just a generic thought tried moving out of that area to check? If you set up a dialup connection through network settings dial in and see the error code which you are receiving.
and use MDMA http://www.nerve.org.za/mdma/ to check and see the signal strength that way we can know whether its your signal issue or not.
