Loop & Dolphin - GSM900 for 2G. Other operators GSM1800.3G is on 2100Mhz on a pan India basis.

3G Pan India is WCDMA 2100 but I think the speed bands differ from 1 to 5.

As per theory, GSM 900 is superior in network coverage than the GSM 1800

Delhi NCR: Dolphin, Airtel and Vodafone on GSM900.BSNL is on GSM900 on a pan India basis.

We can compile the frequency bands from whatever data we can collect in this thread...
VF and Idea in Maharashtra circle on GSM 1800? if yes, I can update the first post.

I found out the hard way by buying a tri-band mobile from US and found it didnt work with Airtel in Chennai, but worked outside Chennai fine. In Chennai, it works with a Vodafone sim. Figured out that it doesnt support GSM900, which is uncommon or not used in the US.

So in Chennai can you fill in the bands for Airtel and Vodafone....... I would update it on top.
