Hi guys I'm thinking about shifting to airtel, Ive been a long time user of bsnl (for like 10 years now), now thinking of shifting.
I'm thinking about taking the rapid 80gb plan (80gb, 8 mbps, 512 kbps after quota).
1) Do you really get the speed advertised? I've seen youtube videos of it, but is it really true? And how is the upload speed? I've heard 0.8mbps is the upload speed for most airtel plans. I'm currently stuck with 300kbps upload with bsnl, so this will be a massive boost.
2)How is the ping to singapore (and other servers like eu/us)? This is actually the most important part for me as I play a lot, dota/sc etc. Specifically If there are dota 2/lol players here what is your ping to the sea server? and could you do a tracert of sg.logon.battle.net.
With bsnl I normally get anywhere between 40-90 ping to singapore, and 250 to the U.S, and 150-200 to EU. But off late I've been getting terrible pings (normally this is fixed by restarting your modem till you get a good ping..but it doesnt seem to be working). do you get the same low pings in airtel, or it higher?
3) Customer support: Now I know this is non existant in bsnl, so anything would be a huge improvement, but in bsnl I knew a lineman who could atleast get people to look at something at times (mostly connection down, line dead kinda issues). But airtel I'd have to rely on the phones. So is it worth anything at all?
4) blocked websites: Another thing that bsnl has started doing recently, a lot of filesharing and image hosting sites are blocked, I've heard airtel is pretty strict on this too. On bsnl I've gotten by using proxies, can you do the same on airtel?
So yeah, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about airtel, but also a lot of people tend to swear by it, so I'm really confused.

Hi, I am from south Chennai using the 4Mbps plan. I speeds I get are 3.8-4.4 D/L and .5-.8 U/L. I have no problem with CS and I have been using Airtel for 8 years. Now the pings to Singapore really depends on the server, when I use Singtel servers in Speedtest test I am getting 65ms Ping, 4.4MB DL and .85 UL. But if I use any other server my Ping goes up to 294ms with 3.8MB DL and .500MB UL. This is because Singtel has a sizeable stake in Airtel. EU and US gets between 230-300ms. As for blocked sites, Airtel is getting worser. Many DL and image sharing sites are blocked in Airtel and Airtel is usually among the first ISPs who block a site. I use the addon AnonymoX in Firefox to get around those. Hope this helps.

I'm on the Rapid 80GB plan.1. Speed as advertised? Yes. In fact, I get slightly more than 8mbps. Upload speed is around 0.87 mbps.2. Pings to Singapore/other places? No idea. I do not play games. I cannot do a traceroute to sg.logon.battle.net as it times out. Can't ping it either.3. Airtel Customer support? Better than all the other providers.4. Blocked websites? No idea.I would say go for Airtel. I have faced almost no downtime & it is way better than BSNL etc.

Most of the time the tracert will not complete to most gaming servers. And most of the time where it stops gives you a pretty good idea about the ping to sg.logon.battle.net and this one 103.28.54.235, will be cool if you guys can post whatever you get on the tracert 🙂

^^ Ahh thanks, it looks good, I think I will go with airtel. Pings seem similar.

You generally get 55ms latency to Singapore servers including Dota 2 servers.
The speed is always faster than advertised. In the past 10 years I have never experienced any slow down. The only failures were when the physical line was faulty (which happens maybe once in two months).
Uplink rate is fixed at 874kbps for ADSL subscribers on the DSLAM but the billing plans on the server side actually allow 1Mbps upload. Some people's ADSL profiles allow the modem to link at higher than 874kbps (one of my older lines did) and it would upload at 1Mbps.
Overall they're the best provider in Chennai by far. I've experienced them all.

Airtel plans suck donkey balls but the uptime is what keeps me from switching to reliance.
I am paying 2.3K including tax for 8mpbs 80GB plan . In Bangalore the same plan gets you 125 GB of data transfer.
