BSNL Broadband Users:: Quick Questions

I've been reading and hearing decent reviews on BSNL's Broadband connection. I'm thinking of giving up my dedicated VSNL line which is costing me a bomb, and opting for this one for home. Just a couple quick questions to users who are already using the service.- So far mentioned I think the equipment used is a USB Modem. Does it have provision for an always on connectivity through an Ethernet Port?- What on an average would be download speeds on a 512KBPS or a 1MBPS connection?- Is the service purely ADSL? So if I choose to buy a Wireless ADSL USB Modem from America, it should work?All help provided would be really appreciated.Thanks so much!!

I have the 512k connection in Bangalore and I get good speeds (300 to 500k) with no disconnections although in other places people face disconnections (sometimes when they use the phone or it rings etc). I think it depends on how good is the quality of the phone cabling...The modem I have is from BSNL and its the Huawei MT800 router with Ethernet (not USB). And this one had built-in PPPoE dialing and DHCP server so my OS can just connect directly...(kinda always-on)There was one guy on Orkut (Broadband India community) who posted that he uses a Netgear WiFi modem and it works and even dials-in to BSNL directly so the computer can just use DHCP to get a local IP (so no problems using Linux etc)...and its always-on there... other new WiFi ADSL modems will work, just make sure they support ADSL2+ technology.. Just make sure its a modem+router (not just a router/accesspoint) which can connect to the phone line directly else you will have to get the BSNL modem as well and plug its Ethernet into the WiFi router..In any case you should double-check the facts yourself, don't go buying 100 modems based on what someone posts online...

I am in Calcutta and here I have been provided with a UTStar External ADSL modem connecting thru Ethernet card. Its always on, though using PPPoE, where you have to "dial" and authenticate to get a connection. Its possible to disconnect and IP is not static but dynamically allotted.I am a subscriber of 256 Kbps (Home 500 plan) and I get around 250 to 256 Kbps download all the time and around 8 KBps upload.Wireless ADSL should work, as long as you can use PPPoE protocol.

what you mean by "class" you mean the USA FCC "class" ? these are chinese made, i dunno.... i haveta look under my modem when i get homebut who cares

They were not popular 2 years back and even now, its not a hot seller because the combined modem-router is costlier than a separate wifi router and modem. And too many technical problems with that combined Netgear modem-router.

I was actually looking at something like this. Let me know what you guys think. Its also supports ADSL2+, if BSNL does swtich to it sometime in the future.

I would still suggest getting a separate Netgear 802.11g router and a good adsl modem. The price for both items will be less than the price for the adsl netgear router. Other than that, its upto you.

Hi macboy and others,I'm using D-Link 502T ADSL Router. It's pretty cheap (Rs.2500).I'm running it on DataOne.It's configured in Annex A and is working fine !Also please note that the companies configure the firmware based on the location of sale. So annex mode is set accordingly and the firmware of modem bought from outside might not match indian standards ! 😛h34r:

You could get a brand new 802.11b/g wireless router off eBay or CircuitCity or something for about $15. That's about Rs. 650. But again, Wifi is not something that is widely used in almost every household in India, so getting one here could be a little more expensive.
