Hello - I have been using Airtel IPTV for about 3.5 years now. It has its shortcomings, which have been discussed extensively on this site. Having said all that, the Time Shift feature kind of makes up for all of that. I watch limited no. of channels, and they are all available on TimeShift, so it does not bother me much. Fortunately, my display and connection all seem to work well, though there are minor occassional jarring, pause, but not too much.
Now my question: I am planning to buy a 40" or 46" LED SMART TV. I am worried,
1) if Airtel IPTV would work as well on large HD screen?
2) Also would the current cables fit into new tech TVs?
3) Does Airtel plan to comeup with HD on IPTV anytime soon?
Currently I am using Samsung 26" LCD and it works like a charm. I live in Gurgaon..
All you techies' inputs are welcome..
Thanks

The cables you have now should fit into almost all TV's, i guess you are using A/V connection as of now or at the most component - just ensure that your new TV have this.
Airtel IPTV does not have any HD channels from what i know, SD channels will ideally not look good on such large screens
My personal take is IPTV is that the ISP's themselves are killing this technology at the moment. IPTV is far more economical & efficient when compared to DTH as seen in Western countries but broadband penetration in India & hence the profitability after investing in such technology is also a concern for ISP's.
*Features like timeshift, media content streaming on IPTV can never work on DTH platform
*Bottom line: I see don't think IPTV will improve in near future, so would personally stay away from it for now

I have a similar concern. I have recently bought a 40" samsung smart tv. I am thinking of having Airtel IPTV connection. My question is if the 1080p pic quality offered on airtel iptv would be good on this HD tv or not? secondly, i read a lot of negative comments about its remote response sluggishness. I just want more suggetions on this. I live in gurgaon. Thanks!

I don't think 1080p is being offered in Airtel IPTV as of now. The normal SD channels offered may not look that great on a 40 inch tv. I guess our Admin used to have this kind of setup, he can perhaps throw some light on this. Don't know much about the remote sluggishness as such, even Myway IPTV on BSNL wasn't giving me such problems. Haven't used Airtel myself, so can't comment

Thanks madhusudhan7, I spoke to an Airtel salesman and he himself is de-selling the IPTV services. I guess we have a long way to go before high quality internet products would be fully integrated in Indian Lifestyle 🙂

Hmm..thanks Mister Anderson and madhusudhan.
Given that I need ti upgrade to 3D LED SMART TV anyway, whats the next best alternative for IPTV -- Tata Sky HD+, or Airtel HD recorder? I definitely need recording facility..
Also - do we know if home wifi works well on SMART TV..and is good enough for regular web browsing on TV?
Thanks for all your inputs.

I think the TV browsing experience still needs some evolution. Many of the objects used on a website are not compatible to be run on browsers of a Tv. I think apps on smart tvs are the way for now. For e.g. browse videos using the YouTube app, or the Facebook app etc
For recording, I think the Tatasky is a good one, however they are upgrading their STBs to MPEG4 and you should get that or wait for that, if you go in for TS.

Tata Sky HD+ is the next best option in my opinion but it also happens to be one of the most expensive too, haven't used Airtel DTH but it's best to stay away from them based on what I read on the internet. Videocon d2h is the best based on their current offerings vs price factor but their HD recorder's are very slow and buggy, UI needs a lot of improvement when compared with TS. Smart TV experience will always be good on Home WiFi with speed's greater than 3-4 Mbps for media streaming, don't know much about the browsing part of it, guess it sound be good as long as the internet speed is stableI think the TV browsing experience still needs some evolution. Tatasky HD+ was always mpeg4 compliant
