Trai puts a cap on roaming charges. Free roaming looks improbable in India for now.

airtel already raised charges to 2 rs for prepaid customer .. we are hopeing the same move from oher vendor soon ...
 
I dont understand why broadband policies and infrastructure related stuff are clubbed with mobile/2g/3g etc. The thing is that there are major disagreements between companies and govt, the pending court cases etc slow down the implementation of ntp 2012. Due to this policies related to wired broadband are put on hold because they are clubbed with the rest of them. Take for example changing the definition of minimum broadband speed from 256 to 512 kbps. This could have been implemented long back but it comes in a package deal with other 2g, 3g and roaming policies which are disputed

The ceiling tariffs prescribed by TRAI in the year 2007 were Rs. 1.40 per minute for outgoing local calls and Rs.2.40 per minute for outgoing STD calls while on national roaming. These ceilings have been reduced to Re. 1.00 per minute and Re. 1.50 per minute respectively. Similarly, the ceiling tariffs for incoming calls while on national roaming have been reduced from Rs. 1.75 per minute to Re. 0.75 per minute.Tariffs for outgoing SMS while on national roaming which were earlier under forbearance have now been capped: outgoing SMS-local at Re. 1.00 per SMS and outgoing SMS-STD at Rs. 1.50 per SMS. Incoming SMS will remain free of charge. Mandating a fully free roaming regime is simply not practicable at this juncture. Compelling a transition to a fully free national roaming regime would result in telecom service providers not being able to recover their costs from roamers. In turn, telecom service providers would pass these costs on to all consumers (predominantly non-roamers) through higher tariffs. TRAI has decided that Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) and Combo Vouchers which were hitherto allowed only for home tariffs can be permitted for roaming tariffs.Further, TRAI has also mandated the service providers to offer special plans for roaming subscribers in which such subscribers can avail of partially free roaming, or fully free roaming in lieu of payment of fixed charges.These changes will come into effect from 1st July 2013.

There you have it. No free roaming. Its upto the Service providers how they will provide it.
 
Still good and better than nothing, that 3.45 rs sms was ripoff though i think incoming shud have been 50p instead.
 
So I am sure providers charging heavily on roaming would revise rates from Rs.1/minute to Rs0.95/Minute and advertise it as HUGE DISCOUNT ON ROAMING..
 
I am just annoyed that sms is considered cheap at 1 rupee per sms in india considering it costs almost nothing to the operator.
thank goodness that airtel 3g still is free on roaming.

Any 3G on roaming would not work where they don't have license.
Incoming SMS Should remain free, as If they start charging any court can give consumers a "STAY Order" for it, cause end user has no way of Blocking Incoming SMS on roaming so if operators start charging you for that, one can easily loose few thousand rupees a day.
Cause I am sure you cannot charge for service which are beyond the end user's consent.
 
Technically, doesn't this order make calls cheaper on roaming than in home circle. Re1 vs Rs.1.20 (assuming 2p/sec base tariff)

Wrong. Intra-circle roaming pacts (as done by A-Vo-Id) have been banned.
All providers can have Inter-circle pacts to provide seamless roaming.
