At last i got BSNL Broadband after paying Rs.1763/-. the local JTO came and installed modem and splitter and tested the connection with his p@$$word and told me that the telecom people will inform p@$$word to me within 24 hours. is it correct?

Yes, a p@$$word is required.He (the JTO) should have given you the userID and p@$$word. Strange 🙁 that it was not given at the time of installation itself.Give it 24hrs and if you do not get the same, call the national help desk (1-600-424-1600) and ask for the DataOne center number in your city. Talk to the local DataOne help desk. (In Chennai the local DataOne center number is 044-28242824 )

yes the username is usually what you listed as your email preferences... say "madhu" or "madhu2005" (without the @dataone.in part)p@$$word is first three letters of your city, say pune, so "pun" then first three letteres of your name "mad" then 123so try username "madhu2005" and p@$$word "punmad123" (as an example)

yes, always required to log in not just the first timeedit😱h just saw your other post, you probably had cable-modem which was always-on, this is dsl where you provide username/password to "dial in"...but you can setup your modem to do the dialing in by itself (with your username/password) so your computer can connect as soon as it boots up completely...see the other posts around here

When you say "no username/password" do you mean you're looking for "always-on"? Dont want to "dial-up"? Want "DHCP"?I'm not sure, maybe Reliance broadband (fiber cables with ethernet connections) has direct connections, but they're in very few places.But in my case, I have set up my DSL modem (the small box with flashing lights that connects between the phone line and the computer) so that I store my username and password in the modem and when I switch it on it connects to BSNL in 20 seconds, so when my computer finishes starting up it has a ready connection to the intrnet and I dont really "require" a username and password and I don't really need to "dial up" myself, so its like an always-on connection...My computer's networking is set up to "obtain IP address automatically" since the modem now handles the connection, get it?

I have a modem with 1 dsl port & 1 ethernet port and I have a broadband router which has internet port, phone ports, ethernet ports. 1) dsl cable that comes from the ISP goes into the modem's dsl port 2) ethernet cable from the modem goes to internet port of the router3) ethernet cable from the router goes to laptop4) phone cable from the router goes to phone instrument ( I have a VOIP phone connection)So even if my laptop is off the internet connection is "on" till the router so my VOIP phone works. So someone told me that the internet connection in India should be a direct connection (not the one with Username and Password) because in the router you do not have the facility of the same.Can you tell me if the BSNL internet connection work this way? Also what is the modem name & model that BSNL provides?ThanksAnu

Hmmm, yep dude, I think you should be able to replace your dsl modem with BSNL's modems and it should work (by setting up your BSNL modem to dial-in by itself)But beware that BSNL plan/service speeds are low, 256kbps, 384kbps, 512kbps and 1 mbps thats all... AND theres a 10 GB per month limit on the 1mbps plan, 5gb for 512, 2gb for 384, and 1gb for 256.So I wouldnt recommend trying VOIP or whatever (or even if your VOIP can work on another internet company's IP address).I've got a Huawei SmartAX MT 800 model , I've read others have UTStarCom modem (dunno the model, you can read around this forum)...

I would suggest you don't keep this setup when any bsnl person comes to your place. voip is still illegal in india( I think). Which voip instrument do you have? Cisco 7xxx, motorola?
Another point is you need 512k and above for a good voip experience because if you make calls to the us or so, your ping is 400ms minimum. Clarity might be there but you will have long lag times, so communication will be half-duplex(like a two way radio). Oh, and I forgot something, the 512k connection gives 128kb/s upload speed. Might not be enough. Good equipment does make a difference here.
What router do you have? Test out your voip connection and post your results in the forum. Might be interested in getting a voip phone if all works fine.

voip cannot be illegal in india... sify sells IP phones. so does many other companies.

hehe i wonder how well the voip phones by sify and other work with the freakin lag here, 400 ms and above is, what?, 10 times higher than those in the US?

well it proves to be hell cheaper than ISD. that makes it work for us indians perhaps... if reliance makes customers happy. lag would do as well 😛as long as it is cheap 🙂
