Monitor downloads

If i opt for Airtel broadband 64kbps rs.600/month unlimited..1. Realistically, what d'load speed will i get?2. Do they monitor my downloads, like if i download something from P2P or some file sharing client and block my IP?

Download speed: You should ordinarily get something close to 64 kbps (i.e. 8 KB/s).... I opted for the Home 128 and at least for the first 2-3 months I was getting thrice the speed... things after then fell to 128kbps... so relaly a matter of your luck... I would suggest the Home 128 plan if you want to download large files.... 64 kbps may not cut it.....

Monitoring: They don't monitor your downloads..... they have no business doing that. If you mean to ask whether they block your IP after a certain amount of downloads a day (like I think Sify does), the answer is No.... it is truly unlimited.

Just watch out for the fact that the Home 64 and Home 128 plans are top-up plans. That is, if you don't already have an Airtel landline, you will have to get one (which I think is at a minimum cost of either 250 or 500 rupees a month... not sure which one...)

thx.. ya i do have the touchtel landline( Now AIRTEL!!) to boot.. so thx.. can i use my own DSL modem?

Yeah, I believe you can.... there's a small thread about it... if you have more questions about dsl modems, post them there.....

p.s. for obvious reasons, the Airtel people may tell you that it only works on their DSL modems... but I wouldn't take much stock in that...

Probably not P2P, but I guess they might be able to monitor HTTP traffic. I use Hathway and I can see that all HTTP traffic goes through NetApp cache, which adds an extra field in outgoing HTTP headers (Go to https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and choose 'Browser Headers'). If they can do this, I suppose they might be logging these requests too. What is the legal situation in India on monitoring Internet traffic? Is it the same as for telephones?

True they have no right poking into our privacy,but have you ever seen a License Agreement with our indian ISP's or even a TAC[Terms And Conditions] while we apply for a new internet account ?
Well the answer is a simple NO !!They must be monitoring every browsing habit ! But thats what I make of it,maybe its just me.
Its india after all,the same india where the Mediah Blog by Pradyuman Maheshwari was rendered useless by the TOI group in a indirect way.
Ever wondered if this thing had happened in the states?

It is a Squid Web Proxy running which is preventing you from accessing certain sites.
In Squid you can write ACL's[Access Control Lists] which can prevent certain sites from opening during the period of time that is set.

I would suggest you read up a bit & write a email to the technical people.Give them your piece of mind.I could have understood if it was a warez/p0rn site or a site offering offensive content but this rule is a FUD !
