Kolkata - GSM/WCDMA Mode

So apparently in Kolkata, Airtel uses Vodafone's towers for 3G.The problem with that for me is the fact that I need to manually scan each time to select either 'AirTel' or 'Vodafone IN' in order to switch between 2G and 3G (and sometimes even 'INA-AIRTEL'), and unless I do this, the phone stays perpetually in either of the two modes, going into "Emergency calls only" if I leave it on 3G and wander into non-3G territory. Is there anyone else with this problem (or a solution to it)?(Galaxy Y on stock Gingerbread.)
