MTNL IPTV: In 2010, Tv Bill Will Be More Than Broadband Bill.

We are used to pay very low cable TV bills (200-300 Rs/month).And we pay Rs.750 for broadband and Rs.500 for landline and pay Rs.350 for mobile. A stupid who lives in USA (none other than my brother) said that in USA, people pay around $50 or much more for cable TV while they pay $30 for broadband and $25-30 for unlimited phone plans.It seems paying more for cable TV than phone may happen in India too.Technology is improving and broadband bills are coming down. TV Content costs are ever increasing and I can easily imagine that we will be paying round Rs.500 for unlimited broadband and the same Rs.500 for Cable/IP TV in 2010. After 2010, we may pay more for TV!!Everyone reading this please comment.

Who you think will watch it then when we have hundred of streaming video sites already up on internet???

streaming video is only a niche thing, the mainstream won't pick it up for a long time, especially in India.And I am not so sure why this is such a big deal to qwerty.

One good reason HDTV.

how about HDTV with satellite.... lol To enjoy that in India at reasonable Price is a Dream 😛 .

a couple of years back i had not thought that i would someday own a mobile phone which i would use instead of a landline phone. i own 2 of them now and one of them allows me to make unlimited free calls to people on the same network in my city. apparently, calling through mobile phones can be cheaper than calling from landline phones. things change. they would in teh cable market too. dth is just the beginning. power to the consumer. we just need competition and it would come. in time.

umm....everything is slowly converging. everything is coming to the IP 😛. Everything is going to come to IP networks be it your cellphone, landline, TV, radio and ofcourse broadband! 😀

But keep in mind that in US, channels make money normally by subscriptions, but in india they make it through ads. I think there is a good chance these channels will drop their charges just to increase their viewership once CAS comes on.

This is news to me. IIRC, license for TV sets in US was very short lived. Broadcast TV in US was paid for by ad revenues and AC Nielsen made a fortune collecting/providing data for advertisers. The same applies to cable/satellite TV with one more "dalal" in the chain.

Correct, its only the pay channels HBO, Showtime etc that work with subscriptions, last i checked they had 50million+ subscribers between them.The free channels are entirely supported by ads, something i notice an increasing amount of here, the price to broadcast a show is the same everywhere, ads make up thorugh sheer numbers here.I'm in 2 minds about HDTV, i know a friend in Taiwan that can't stand to watch DVDs(!) anymore, instead preferring to watch movies on Japanese HD satellite broadcasts !!..think about that for a while, your avg tv signal PAL is 350(?) by 280(?) lines, DVD is 720 x 540, and HDTV is 1080 x 720.If you ever watch HDTV, everything you currently own will become rubbish, forget the VCDs (early 90s tech) that are still so popular here.

DVDs never got popular in india. it's hard to find stores even in gurgaon which carries DVDs. internet and easy accessibility to content on the net has made situation worse.

HDTV is a long way off in India but once it lands here , internet will never match HDTV broadcast. Youtube have already received a lot of notices due to hosting copyrighted videos on their servers. Bittorrent have faced lawsuits for letting people download movies and songs and lately they have signed a deal with Motion pictures. The more internet grows the more it's going to be difficult to curb piracy and all the big companies are not going to sit and watch it. I said it yesterday and i say it again. Internet is not far away from being regulated.

Except he gets real broadband, we don't. What's the point when you're sweating your ass off as you surf through internet afraid if your bandswidth meter has gone beyond the capped limit? You're comparing totally different things here, and baseless point.

You need HD TV to watch HD transmisison, on ur normal tv you wont find much, if any difference in quality between HD TV and normal tv. In india HD is still a distant dream. We will be renting HD movies before any HD transmission is available. Imagine watching zeetv,doordarshan, star plus on HDtv - will that make any difference? and to watch HD on internet you will need atleast 10-20 Mbps speeds....which aint happening here!

Spot on. HDTV transmission is only possible through satellite TV and cable provided the existing cable wires are replaced with new high data carrying capacity ones.
