Hi, I have a BSNL broadband connection in my desktop PC, with wi-fi modem(Model: ITI make DNA-A211-1). I have recently installed the modem. Earlier i had a non-wi-fi modem. Now i have few queries,1. How to know, whether the modem is enabled for wi-fi or not.2. I have read in many sites that the configuration of the modem can be done by going to site 192.168.1.1. But when i try to go to that site through IE, it is not opening.3. Also i want to connect to this modem through my Samsung Galaxy S Duos smart phone. While enabling the wi-fi in the phone, it detects the modem and tries to connect it and gives the message "Obtaining IP address", but it remains in that status for sometime and after that it does not connect. So how to connect my phone to the modem.4. Is it required to connect to broadband in my PC to get accesss in my phone or just making on the PC & Modem(Without connecting it to Broadband) will suffice for connecting with the phone.5. How to password protect my modem, so that it can not be used by anybody.Kindly clarify my above doubts, so that i can connect my phone to the wi-fi modem.

1. How to know, whether the modem is enabled for wi-fi or not.
By going into modem setting page from 192.168.1.1
2. I have read in many sites that the configuration of the modem can be done by going to site 192.168.1.1. But when i try to go to that site through IE, it is not opening.
If 192.168.1.1 isn't working then maybe your modem/router address is different.
Run cmd.exe in Administrator Mode and type ipconfig, note what the Default Gateway address is, this is your modem/router address that will give you access to various settings.

This could happen because of various reasons, If you connect to the Internet through a dialer or only through the PC's operating system then the modem isn't in an always on state(Wifi device like a Phone won't know or can't connect to the wifi if modem is setup to connect to the Internet only through OS, it needs to be in an always on state meaning, this gives the steps) or this

Already answered. It depends on how the modem is configured, if username and password are provided in modem/router page settings then both the PC and the Wifi device will connect automatically, but if username-password are configured only on PC OS then a wifi device can't connect even though i knows a wifi access point exists.
5. How to password protect my modem, so that it can not be used by anybody.
Every different model of router/modem has a different setup in its settings page layout, so just browse through it and look for password protecting access to your router(this is to prevent your modem settings from being changed by someone else).
You can password protect the Wifi Access Point that you create with your desired level of security from the settings. If you don't use any security and make it an open Wifi then anyone can connect to it.
Another way is to block access by Mac Address blocking. Note down your phone/wifi device's Mac Address and give access to it only, this way even if you make an Open Wifi no one else will be able to connect to it since every wifi device has its own unique Mac Address.
This solution is sometimes forced on users, as often setting a security setting on the Wifi Access point like WPA, etc doesn't work, its the fault of the modem/router and the above solution of Open Wifi with Mac Blocking is a workaround for that(personal experience of having a weired modem).
Note that these measures can be hacked through but only by someone who knows what he/she is doing, its reasonably safe for everyday users.

Subnet mask would be same and the IP address could be as page mentions.

First in the TCP/IP properties of your WiFi adapter set IP address as 192.168.1.1 and default gateway as 198.168.0.0. Now type 192.168.1.1 in your browser and set the modem in PPPoE mode. Better select WPA2 PSK and set a good password. Now in TCP/IP setting properties set as " Obtain IP address automatically ". Check if there is an an antenna in your modem, if yes, it is most probably a WiFi modem.

After going through your tips, i could set up the wi-fi in the modem and now i am able to access the wi-fi through my Samsung Galaxy S Duos phone. I have one doubt though. Now my broadband is in always on condition, that means whenever i make the PC ON, it automatically connects to internet. Is it not possible to connect to broadband manually,i.e. whenever i require internet, which i was doing earlier(before wi-fi setting), and also able to use wi-fi. Kindly suggest a way of doing that. Also now i find that when i connect to internet, some data downloading and uploading is going on, which i can monitor through Network Meter. When i check the task manager, it is showing blank though. How to know, which program is using the download/upload of data? Kindly give your valuable suggestion. Thanks in advance.

If you are on Windows 8, its Task Manager is superb and will tell you right away which application is using the Internet.
For Windows 7, either use Sysinternals Process Monitor, or Overview - Process Hacker or System Explorer - Keep Your System Under Control , etc.
For manually using the Internet on PC OS, keep the Local Area Connection(Ethernet) with which your PC Internet works, in Disabled state, and enable it when you need Internet on PC. Its in Network Connections in Network settings in Control Panel.
I am not sure if using a dialer on OS ONLY and ALSO wifi(without having username pass in it) is possible. For that to work the internet connection provided by the ISP (like BSNL) would need to have a different scheme i think.
There could be some way to not enter username pass in wifi modem(as it was for you before) and instead provide those username-pass on the device end. Since i am not familiar with Android im not sure how that will work out but it could i reckon.
Maybe someone else can help you in that, try google or reddit if you dont find answers here.

why not save the BSNL user/pass in the modem itself which is known as "always ON" if you secure the wifi then only the devices which know the wifi key will be able to use your internet.This way you can work on internet without the need to turning ON the PC which is good option and will save electricity :secret:
