first of all tata itself is huge company. the truth is tata are smart. they dont have any knowledge in DTH field so they have partnered with the best. plus partnering with sky means they dont have to fight for indias most popularbroadcasters (star).we all know how much DishTV had to fight to get star channels. (took almost 2yrs after their launch). and tata... they already had star (sky = star) and they managed to get zee within 2months of launch!rule of 80-20 is to prevent foreign company completely taking overcertain industry (like coke taking over thumsup). but in this case itsnot possible for takeover tata by sky in future. so its fine.

if tata were smart they would first fix their telecom and internet division. apparently they are failing to do so. Tata Sky is a waiting bombshell.

telecom I am not sure.internet i am happy. my 7star uptime was very bad from abt 1 and half yrs.but ever since tata-vsnl took over 7star, within 3months downtime reduceddrastically. it does go down (MTNL is better, never seen it down in 2months)but not that bad.plus tata has taken over VSNL. which means almost all internet trafficgoes thru their backbone. that again in my opinion was smart move. i am nottalking abt service. i am talking abt accurately jumping into business whichhas bright prospects.abt Tata Sky ... well its just beginning.. if sky (world leader in DTH) cant doit then no1 can. plus soon more insat satellites would be launched and i amsure tata would bag more transponders.

Tatas will have leading presence in a sector of industry where they were totally absent a few years back.
It would not have been possible alone. When they've gained valuable experience over the next few years, I am sure they will try n buy out Sky's smaller 20% stake, or atleast be more involved in the decision making processes. Look at what they are doing in other other sectors - steel, bought CORUS, Heavy vehicles in S Korea, and on and on. They are going Multinational in every sector they are already in.

Far from being banned, this partnership is actually great for Indian Industry, Tatas and the Consumer too. I hope for hundreds more such (80-20) partnerships, in all sectors of industry.

Also, all this talk about banning this and banning that is really rather foolish in this age of globalization- it amounts to hitting onself with a ... , for if we ban another countries' company here, they will retaliate and ban a few of ours there, they will lose a few Rupees and we will lose a lot of Dollars. Go on a few more times like this and India will be back in the pre 1991 era of closed Nehruvian command ecoonmy, when India was firmly anchored in the in Doldrums. Remember your pay packets then. My Dad, a Doctor used to bring in 3000 bucks! Our Driver takes more than that today.

Also, there is this little thing called WTO, which India has so wisely signed, which forbids such unilateral acts of banning companies when YOU don't like how they work internally. QWERTY might do well to learn about ethics / civics and fair trade practices. How do you think we Indians would like it if the US Government decided to ban Wipro a majority stake holder in Net Sol Inc,
for similar reasons, and Wipro ends up losing the the Approx USD One Billion they invested in restructuring and equipment? Not fair is it? A country which does not have a sense of buisness ethics is doomed , not just economically but socially as well.

Look forward to a Tata DTH service in EU or USA 5 years down the line!

What's with this nationalisation bs ? Are you some out of work lawyer trying to stir useless shit up ?

let's not forget its the content that is king here.

Are TATA's making any content ? NO, they are just operators/distributors and as such have a share thats more than enough.

The minimum controlling stake is usually 51:49 in other countries. It prolly 20% Star here, to protect whatever minuscule investment they have made to provide the Star service in India.

Hey dont take this personally, but the phrase OP (Original Poster) is commonly used in forums to refer the starter (beginner) of a post. IMHO that's easier, dont you think 🙂 ?!

Instead of banning we should have some more these. I honestly feel that if TATA can sell another 20% share to another foreign media company and improve the existing dth then I will say please go ahead.
