Friends,I noticed something today that I am keen to know the reason for.I use a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT S5830 with Vodafone 3G and one of my friends use the Samsung Galaxy S I9000, he too is on Vodafone 3GWhile doing some speed tests today, I noticed that my phone was max'ing out at around 2.5 mbps download and about 0.14 mbps upload but when I ran a speed test on my friend's mobile, it max'ed out at around 4 mbps download and 1.5 mbps upload. I was literally holding both the phones together while I ran the tests so I know it's not a location issue. I have also been on Airtel and BSNL 3Gs but I have never noticed by phone reaching a speed of above 3 mbps download and about 0.15 mbps uploadAnother thing I noticed is that the network type on my phone constantly changes between UMTS and HSDPA (while data service is ON) but always on UMTS (while data service is set to OFF) ..but my friend's network type always stays on HSDPA (irrespective of whether data is on or off) and the H icon never changes to 3G, unlike mine.So is this because of the difference in tech specs between our phones? Does the I9000 support a higher data rate than the GT S5830?Thanks

the numbers you have posted are related to frequency supported by the phones. nothing to do with speeds. india uses 2100 frequency for 3g i believe.both the models seem to support HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps. i do not really know about the HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps listed with Galaxy s though.

hmm...HSUPA rate of 5.76 Mbps would explain why the I9000 has such high upload speed. But what about the download speed...both the speeds were conducted back to back from exactly the same place...mine reached 2 Mbps and my friend's 4.5 MbpsHow much do rest of us here generally get with Voda 3G?One thing also worth mentioning here...is that he seemed to have a much lower latency than I did...his PINGs were around 100 ms and mine were around 300ms

I usually get upto 5-6 Mbps DL & 2-2.5 Mbps UL max - when the signal strength is good & latency b/w 50-100 msP.S: I use HTC One X

Hi Mohit,My download speeds are 4~4.2Mbps but my uploads are always below 1Mbps. Also there are only 2 bars in 3g network which drops to just 1 frequently. GSM network shows all 5 bars all the time. Recently there were few call drops also. Does your iPhone switches to GSM automatically while calling.

I believe it depends on the 3G coverage in your area which results in call drops as 1 bar is not sufficient to make voice calls and thus switches to Gsm . Also my 3G remains on even when on a call and doesnt change whatsoever

My data pack is going to expired today, I have still some MBS left, if I recharge it today again, would it get carried forward or would it just expire anyway?

Still, at 150-200 bucks a gb, it is quite manageable, unless ofcourse you're completely dependant on wireless for your data needs.
