hmm. where do i get nook in india? 😕

I was fortunate to have a cousin flying down. Am not sure how else you can procure one. But try and figure it out. All the research I did and reviews I read, it seems that nooks is the best one to go for.

Also based on everything I read about ereaders, it seems that you get locked down to the ecosystem of the manufacturer you choose. So books from Amazon won't run on the nook and vice versa. Apparently you can only buy books for your reader from its manufacturers store. But due to certain laws as an Indian we can't buy books from Amazon or the B&N store. To do that you will need an American credit card. Indian no are rejected. So you are left with the gutenberg books or you'll have to torrent them. B&N is so evil it won't let you boot the nook unless you have a B&N account. And you can't create a B&N account without a CC no. So i was sitting with my device for a day unable to use it. Finally found a work around online and it works fine. Its a simple straightforward thing to by pass the initial screen.

i have my Sony e reader lying with me ............only used for couple of hours. if u want to buy that tell me.

i bought it for my reading of stocks trading related readings...........but i couldnt use it as 6" screen is not good enough for viewing charts .........it didnt work for me.

its almost brand new.

its has touch interface.

I have the barnes and noble nook touch.. I bought it an year ago when it was released 140$ plus a case for 30$ 😡 (cheap third party cases weren't available then as it was a newly released product) which i dont use. The rubberized body doesnt get dirty and there is no need of a screen protector as such as well cause the screen is recessed..I chose the nook because i demoed it in the store and i liked the compact size... You cant demo a kibdle.. And touch kindles weren't available also kindles dont open epub files books can only be purchased from Amazon store.. On the nook there is no such restriction.. Any file can be converted to epub and viewed on the nook..I prefer the ereader as it is light , portable and e-ink feels like reading from a book..

i assumed that there are text-file-format to kindle format converters available online? i mean gutenberg provide their content in kindle format. readability can convert web content into kindle format! how hard is it to convert epub/text/pdf files to kindle format?

yes there are but there would be formatting errors with these softwares... anyhow both are priced at 99$.... if i had to buy one today then also i would go with the nook because of no special offers and good rubberized body.. i just want epub files.. I don't care for opening pdfs and word docs or mp3 files they all are pointless features which look good only on the spec sheet.. and the kindle doesnt even come with a power adapter..

A bit irrelevant, but should help considering the usage because if you use it roughly, device should be of a good build quality.

Drop Test: Nook Tablet Vs Kindle Fire (Great Deal) - YouTube

drop tests don't tell the complete story.. there are many drop tests on youtube comparing iPhone 4/4s with samsung Galaxy s2 which show us how the iphone's glass is shattered and galaxy s2 is unharmed.. but this is so not true.. a friend's s2 fell accidentally even though there was no physical damage after 6-7 hours red yellow black colored patches came on the screen and the panel had to be replaced and he had to pay for it even though it was under warranty..

but how do one get the nook here in india with no one coming down here from the states?

and what about the login with b&n account that requires a US based credit card? 🙂

i can ask my friend to buy a unit for me and fedex it to me after connecting it to his account. he is a nice guy. would not mind doing it for me 😛

any other alternatives?

great. now i am terribly confused. i have option to purchase a kindle or a Sony reader from members of this forum. i have option to order nook through some shop and ship service. and i cannot make up my mind 😕

😕 kindle has e-ink display which means you are not staring at a backlit display but plastic with ink etched on it. reading a print sheet of paper is much more soothing than reading a brightly lit display. that's why ebook readers are so popular even though tablets are selling like crazy.
