Tata Photon
Hi All!I live in Kolkata and am a heavy internet user both for recreational and work purposes. At first I had Tata Photon+ prepaid (bought in 2010). At that time, I used to get 5GB at speeds of 1-1.5mbps and after the bundled usage was over I used to get torrent download speeds of upto 25kbps. It was not ideal. Recently, they revamped their prepaid plans so that if 5GB was over, you had to recharge again to have access to the internet. So I bought a postpaid plan with them. Which is worse. I have the Rs950+5gb plan. After the bundled usage was over, I'm supposed to get 155kbps speed. In reality, I'm getting DL speeds of 2-3 kbps. I discovered the hard way that their "FUP" of 7gb is complete b******t!.Point is I need a better connection! I've read a LOT of posts by a LOT of people on this forum....and I've very, very confused about my options. 🙁So listed below is what I need/think. What do you think?1) I would like a respectable torrent download speed...atleast of 60kbps if not more.2) Initial expenditure aside, I don't want to spend more than 1k monthly on internet. I would be willing to compromise on the money if I get (1).3) I have been looking at BSNL EVDO options Rs750/month unltd. What are the torrent speeds on that plan?(I understand that speeds depend on proximity to tower/signal strength etc. I live in an area which is well-connected...so these things can be assumed to be at par)4) Should I consider BSNL 3G? Does it work the same way as regular networks (I dont know much about 3G)? Would torrent speeds be better on the 3G network? How expensive would a 3G dongle be? Would BSNL 3g be the best option for me?5) I looked at the Airtel & BSNL sites but I would like to know the loopholes for their plans esp for a heavy user like me?Can somebody please suggest an option for me? I already have 2 Dongles I don't know what to do with...I don't want to become a collector! Help!

1. Some bsnl wireline plans have 512k post fup in the sub rs1000 range. With airtel, you'll be left with 256k post fup, and in the sub 1000 range, the plans have a measly fup, not to mention throttling during the day time. 2. Already answered.3. One of the forum members, has been getting 2.22 mbps constant on evdo. While another is stuck on 1X. bsnl provides evdo data cards for a trial period, I believe, in order for you to evaluate the service.4. BSNL 3G does not have a fup free unlimited plan, and given your heavy usage 10-15GB (

i thought kolkata had some regional service providers offering good packages? ah right. you mentioned it in the last point.

EVDO is a great option if you are looking for an unlimited connection with good speeds. I am also using BSNL EVDO and i am getting consistent 2 Mbps download and 512 kbps upload speeds... The best part is it is truly UNLIMITED.. 🙂

Thanks everyone for your responses, esp x720 for the detailed reply! I really appreciate it!

I am using the unlimited plan of BSNL EVDO which costs 750 bucks. As I said above it's truly unlimited, no FUP nothing...Torrents work the same as direct downloads. I easily get around 250 KBPS on torrents...No restriction on youtube. I watch 480p videos without buffering...720p needs a bit of buffering..

u r still lucky than me that u r from kolkata and you have lot of options.1. alliance....best for torrent2.bsnl evdo3.meghbala4.bsnl broadbandso on....call bsnl and ask them for demo in house about evdo signal.

Alliance really looks good! They actually have pro-peering plans!! I'll call them tomorrow but I don't think they offer dongles...I had called BSNL at Kalighat a week back when they told me about the plan. The person I spoke to had no information about demos etc. I called them today again with no response (I live in South Kolkata). I plan to go and speak to them in person about a demo tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your help! I'll keep you posted! 🙂

Just a tip, when wanting quick service from bsnl, use this page - udaan.bsnl.co.in .And, if your budget wasn't a constraint, you could either go for alliance's top tier plans, or bsnl's higher plans.

Hi everyone!Just wanted to give an update: I've initiated deactivation of Photon Postpaid...good riddance! Alliance works through the cable operator network and my operator seemed to be unaware of it. So I went and got the BSNL EVDO dongle yesterday. Unfortunately, they haven't activated it yet! When I called their office today, the lady said that their servers were slow etc (vague excuses) and to wait till tomorrow. By the looks of it won't get it to work before Monday. 🙁

BSNL people always give vague excuses, hang in there. btw, didn't you ring up the numbers given on Alliance website, I'm sure they would've told you if any operator near to you was offering their services.

I called Alliance at their numbers but no one seemed to be answering the call! So I messaged through their website; they replied within 48 hours. They did give me a cable operator's information but that guy doesn't operate in my area. I guess their information either is outdated or they just don't operate in my locality. 🙁Called BSNL again, the woman was cordial but couldn't help me. I'm supposed to call them after 12:00 noon again...apparently their tech guy would be available at that time. Lets see what "magic" he works. Ah, well.

I need some advice from the tech-savvy members here. I was having problems with the installation of the BSNL connection manager (error:installation overtime) due to which the software was not detecting the device. The guy at BSNL tried the device on his PC and it worked just fine. He didn't know much about computers to diagnose the problem on my laptop. He asked a colleague who said that it could be a problem with some dll file in the windows registry etc but he was v.vague in conveying this information. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? Any idea how can I fix the issue??
