Wow, I was expecting this. This surely is slap by Dravid to BCCI.BCCI has been selfish politics. Since he is under contract he cant react offensively to BCCI but this retirement is definitely with a purpose to tell that "What do you think? I am not your puppet!"

They treated him like a spare tyre. They select him when the team is not doing well or when they encounter bowling pitches.Glad he retired from ODI's.He has been India's best oneday player and if they had had to honour him he should have been in the world cup side. Not now.

He has been India's best oneday player

He is a fantastic player. But, come on...

I guess there could be some understanding between Dravid & BCCI, by which BCCI gave him last chance to play ODI and retire after that, as it would have been bad if he retired without playing any ODIs in recent time.
But he is great ODI player as well (7th highest scorer with 10000+ runs in ODI) and deserved to be in ODI team as permanent member like Sachin.
Records | One-Day Internationals | Batting records | Most runs in career | ESPN Cricinfo

Hmmm... He was quoted saying something like - "I had not been picked for last 2 years, hence did not tell the selectors of my desire to focus only on Tests"

Exactly that quote clearly tells that it was not a "mutual understanding".His quotes were well crafted to give indirect hints that he is not happy that he was selected like this but at the same time made sure that BCCI can not take an offence out of the statement.

I would have been happy to see these guys Saching, Dravid, LAxman & Ganguly lifting the world cup trophy...they were very close in 2003 WC but didnt happen....Surely he is 1 of the best indian batsman india produced in Test Matches....I would rate him better than Sachin when it comes to outside india Test MAtches...Where he excelled better than Tendulkar...

Talking of RD's permanent place in ODI Team:The main factor against him is that ODIs dont test Batsmen's patience & temperament as much as Tests do. So guys like Yuvi, Kohli, even Rohit Sharma & Raina can easily excel in these formats while batting. The pitches are easier to bat on.So the expertise that RD has, gets nullified almost. Except for cases where the ODIs are in SA or England. It all boils down to the other utilities that the players offer - may be having a golden arm, or lightning in field.......and RD loses out on these aspects.

Exactly, and RD normal scoring rate is around 4.5-5 an over, whereas in the subcontinent where India plays most of its matches, the normal scoring rate is 6-6.5, atleast in the last decade or so. Hence it is only on difficult conditions that his need is felt.

Definately man I still remember coming from school and seeing dravid and ganguly bat on their test debuts in England 1996 .. time flies .. all are gone just laxman and sachin left .. laxman defo next to go ..

Set to retire, as in not confirmed yet. Good decision, albeit delayed. Now that one man whom all of India is waiting for to retire...
