Hi all,I have a DSL-502T modem and would like to set up a Wi-Fi at home to access Wifi via Android and iOS devices. Obviously, this would mean changing to a wireless router from MTNL Mumbai? Which one do I get from my local MTNL in exchange? I believe, the rental cost for wired / wireless modems are the same? Please can anyone let me know how do I go about this, after I get the modem too? Thanks a lot in advance!

You'd better off buying a standalone wifi router. Any specific budget ?

Let me know about any range you'd recommend. Also, if I buy the modem you recommend, would that work if I move to FTTH in the near future?

Thanks!

You need to tell me how big the area of operation is going to be.Yes, it will work with ftth too. When you switch over to ftth , mtnl will replace your adsl modem with an ftth cpe. Since your wifi router will be independent of the modem, you can simply plug in the lan cable from the ftth cpe into the router and continue using it . Ive been using a similar setup for my ftth connection 🙂

Meaning?

How big is the place over which you want to recieve the wifi signal ?

Radius of > 10 metres. What are the variants available to cover specific radiuses? Thanks.

Currently MTNL is currently handing out the Beetel B450TC1 modem cum WiFi router to its customer who opt for wifi. This is a combined ADSL modem+ cum wifi router. As you mentioned the rent is the same but there will be an additional one time installation charge (if I am not mistaken). You have three option

1) Go in for a 2 in 1 unit from MTNL & continue to pay monthly rent.

2) Buy your own ADSL modem+ cum wifi router (combined unit).

3) Buy only the wifi router so it can be used with your FTTH connection in future.

Regarding the range there are a lot of imponderables which can affect the range of a wifi unit & is very difficult to guess till one actually checks the signal strength on site.
If you want to go in for the (1) option you can just call 1500 & tell them they will call back to confirm, that’s it. They will do the rest.
For the (2) option you go ahead & buy the unit of your choice & install it, then return the MTNL piece to them.
For the (3) option you buy the unit of your choice & install it.

Thanks a lot Socrates. Questions:

[*]How's the quality of Beetel B450TC1 modem in comparison to D-Link 502T modem? I've had 502T Modem for many years now. MTNL has surely recovered more than the cost, yet they continue to charge me like other subscribers get charged
[*]Currently, my modem page shows speeds of 1024 kbps (1 mbps) instead of 1.13 mbps (as per the DSL Unlimited 999 Plan). Will this get corrected? If I have to correct this using this modem instantly what should I do to correct it? Would emailing or call help? What's the email ID where this would get sorted out?
[*]Which Wifi router would you recommend for use with FTTH whenever available? Of course I'd want to use the same modem for the current DSL too? Just trying to be future proof 🙂
[/list]
Thanks again.

I have been using the D-Link DSL 502T (ADSL+ modem) & a Linksys WRT 54G (WiFi router) both outdated by now 😀. Check out https://broadband.forum/mtnl-broadband/76466-suggest-some-good-wireless-router/ where we have discussed some options makes/models. My friends who are using the Beetel model have homes in the 450 sqft range & have no problems. With regards which model router to use someone above is already using a wifi router with FTTH so his inputs will be useful. With regards to being synced to a lower speed than entitled to see https://broadband.forum/mtnl-broadband/76559-low-speed-with-mtnl/ for useful inputs.

One more thing which mode/make you choose please ensure that your wifi security is good for more inputs on that see Socrates it contains apart setup for different models/makes it show how wifi should be made secure.

Tell me something ! 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k ? Something ?

All: 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k

Thanks!
