Hey,I just got a 4mbps leased line from airtel. Copper line terminated at our end on SHDSL modem (RJ 45 output). I wanna setup my internal network. I've option of using Cisco or D-Link routers/switches(layer 2 switches). Cisco is 10 times the price of D-Link. What should I use? What are the benefits of Cisco? My LAN will have around 50 terminals with a lot of VoIP traffic on both intra and internet.

Are you talking about a router or a managed switch (they're rather different devices)? Which models are you looking at?It sounds like you're trying to set up a call center, so you need rock-solid stability - and as such, I'd say go for Cisco. Hands down. There is a reason the Cisco devices are 10x the price of D-Link ones - quality, features, stability - even power consumption.

I was thinking of going with Cisco 2901 router with D-Link 24 port DES 1024 switch.

One quick question. Due to budget issues, if we need to go for a lightweight setup initially, should we go for a better quality router with relatively cheaper switches (like un-managed or semi-managed) or should it be the other way round (cheaper router and managed switches)? Thanks.

Also, do we need a UTM or is there another option for us to block access to some objectionable sites from our internal network? I was thinking of configuring a proxy server and setting up access rules and iptables on them. Also, maintaining an internal DNS server for access restrictions. Would you propose we go for UTM?

The SHDSL modem supplied by Airtel *should* act as a gateway and as such I think you need one or the other, that is, a managed switch.

That being said, if it turns out that you do need both, I'd go for a better quality router and cheaper unmanaged switches because if it craps out you can simply swap out the hardware and be back up and running in minutes (IF YOU DO THIS, ENSURE YOU BUY A SPARE AND TEST IT EVERY MONTH OR SO). They won't perform as well as a better quality switch but for the sake of a 4mbit/s Internet connection, I doubt it will matter.

As far as which brand to choose, you should look at the long-term. The likelihood is that going Cisco will save you money over time - you set it up once and leave it, whereas the short-term savings you'll get buying another brand (such as D-Link) *may* cost you a bundle in support costs and/or downtime and/or upgrade costs later. Like I said, there's a reason the device is more expensive, an there is no point in doing things in a half-assed way - it's a VERY common mistake made by companies all over the world - I can't stress how many times I've had companies come to me in the past regretting taking the cheaper option and being only too happy to shell out 150EUR an hour to fix it. Ahh, those were the days... some of those companies are still running the same hardware I put in several years ago.

In addition, finding someone to configure a Cisco box should be pretty easy too because of the system it uses - not necessarily so with other brands.

Also, do we need a UTM or is there another option for us to block access to some objectionable sites from our internal network? If you set up a proxy server (not an entirely silly idea, but again, ensure you set up two), then you won't need a router - you can (and probably should) use such a box to do the routing as well. AGAIN, BUY A SPARE. ENSURE THE HARD DRIVE IS MIRRORED OFTEN. As far as access restrictions, this can be taken care of by a managed switch - you can actually block one port from talking to another if you want to. Don't bother trying to run your own DNS server unless it's absolutely vital - it can be a massive headache and an unnecessary drain on system resources.

So, to conclude, possibly the best setup will be:
50 node network > Cisco managed switch(es) > Linux box for access rules/iptables/routing/bandwidth control > SHDSL modem

Spend more money now: you will thank me later if/when something goes wrong.

A bit off-topic question but how much are you paying for the 4mbps leased line in Mumbai for installation, security deposit (if any) as well as monthly charge?

Thanks in advance for reply.

Yeah me too wanna know the cost .. How much it cost u? monthly and security deposit ..

if reliability is a main concern then go for cisco. also the dlink support is not that nice. if u ever need to call cisco, believe me they WILL help you out with troubleshooting. it wud be rare for them not to be able to fix up. the phone support is miles ahead of any1 esle. also u wud get a decent price if u ever decide to sell ur equipment. there is a decent market for refurbished cisco products. if u r intent on saving money try to get ur hands on a refurb model.
once u get it be sure to let it run for atleast 10 days before going live. that last thing u wud want in a couple of resets in a live network !!. cisco does burn in the routers but always better to do it urself.

Thanks for all your feedback. We've setup our network. In case anyone's interested, we went with Software UTM (Untangle) and Cisco managed switches. So far no problem. Also, price of airtel 4mbps lease line in mumbai is Rs. 2.5 lpa.

Dear Friends,

I also have got the same plan with same provider and know the solution. You need to get your DHCP enabled in order to connect your Leased Line router to your switch and than put every computer on Obtain an automatic ip.

I am definitely sure that this must sort your issue.

By default Airtel DHCP is disabled and because of this, you are unable to connect your PCs with your switch without configuring IP addresses provided by Airtel.

Once this will be enabled, than you dont need to give any IP address to any PC, just put them to Obtain IP Address Automatic.

Hope this helps...

I myself have also invested too much of time in this...

Regards,
Amir Ahmad

Hey is that true that if we install multiple PC through 1 lease line all get same bandwidth? If they access all at same time

well. from my understanding, they lay down as dedicated line just for your house. or something like that. it's a dedicated connection. no sharing with anyone else in the middle. it is a good option for folks who do not have connectivity options available through other sources.

Hey Mtnl sites states
For leased line 1:1
For home Broadband 1:28
Just like this dedicated thing exclusively no middle man
Got it
But my search is On
