Using wireless router as an access point?

Hello everyoneCurrently I am using beetel 450bx 1 router in 1 room to connect to bsnl broadband. I have a lan wire connecting 2 rooms and want to use another router as an access point in the second room to get wifi signal in the 2nd room as well. Which router would be good for that which is easy to configure as well as an access point. I would not like to spend more than about 1500 rs but can spend more if the quality is very good.Regards

The rooms are on different floors.




1.) Method one doesnt improve much signal. I have also tried using a can as a parabolic antenna.


2.) The main broadband and landline connection is coming at 1st floor. The main line is already connected to a splitter which then goes to the modem and the phone line back to other rooms. Other than that I didnt get what you mentioned :-?




3.) I was hoping another router as a WAP would be easier solution and it could be used standalone as a router also later.


4.) The signal is almost non existent. I already have a lan wire between 2 rooms. Wont it be better if some router can be connected via lan and configured as access point only? How easy or difficult would that be?




5.) Laptop has to be used at different places.

You could set your other router as a repeater. No need to connect any lan wires to it.

Please read thread carefully. Member is using a RJ45 to other room to use another system ( laptop or desktop.)
He does not have another wifi router.

Now I get it.Lets label the two rooms, room 1 and room 2.Room 1Adsl source, phone line from splitter provides telephone to the entire house.Now, you've got the beetel in room1, and you say you've got a LAN wire connecting the two rooms. Assuming both rooms have LAN wire (rj45) sockets, you can plug a LAN wire into the beetel and the other end into the socket in room one. Now go to room 2, plug a LAN wire(wire2) into its socket. And plug the other end of wire2 into the wan port of your new router(a standalone wifi router is enough) , you've now setup the router in room 2 also.Alternatively, the telephone wire coming out from the splitter (meant for the modem) could be split into two(using a normal line distributer) one part would go into the beetel, and the other to room 2 modem, you'd need a new modem for this arrangement as we are using telephone wires here. Another option is by distributing the line via the power line, I'll elaborate on this one if you're interest ed.

Now, you've got the beetel in room1, and you say you've got a LAN wire connecting the two rooms. This option looks to be most feasible since I already have a LAN connection in the 2 rooms. So I plug one end of the lan wire into any lan port in beetel and the other end into the wan port in any other router and it is set up? No need to modify settings in the 2nd router?


Also can you suggest some good routers in the 1500-2000rs price range?

No, you don't need to modify any setting, set the other router to Dynamic in connection settings ( it already is in this setting for most router)
Since, you need the signals only in one room.

Well it would be good to get the signal at other places as well and I am hoping that since even the beetel did a good job a wireless N router should be better than that. And if I buy 1 with 2 5db antennas how much does that cover normally? What is the signal strength of beetel 450bx1 antenna?

From my experience, beetel's range sucks, so going by that logic, these routers should perform far better than it, especially the N300 ones. As for the antenna's, I'm no expert at that, you'll have to wait for essbebe to answer that.essbebe, if you're around, have a look here !

In that case even 1 router might be able to provide good reception. I guess I would wait till I get airtel disconnected. Normally they do not care much about the modem and router. However if they do in this case then I would have to buy an adsl+router instead of normal router.

Unlikely but are you talking about the value in red box??

Also what does the value in green box signify? Which rate does it talk about?

Those, again are your line stats, not wifi ones.The green box specifies the rate you are synced at currently ie 2 mbps downlink and 512kbps uplink. Given your snr values, you can expect to get a max of 3 mbps on your line, but then modem stats are often very wrong.Is the exchange far off from your place ?
