Hi Friends,

My laptop model is Toshiba Equium L10-273.

Equium L10-273 - Product Specifications - Toshiba

I have windows XP Home edition and there is an error message with blue background and white font that has been coming up on my screen whenever I boot it. It stays there on the screen and does not allow the laptop to boot. My laptop is fully updated and has the latest updated version of Net Protector Internet Security program. It does not seem to be a virus related problem. Here is the exact message. Please help me, thanks.

------------------------------
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer. This overrun could potentially allow a malicious
user to gain control of this machine.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:
*** STOP: 0x000000F7
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Here is how it looks like on my pc.

My laptop is a dual boot system with Fedora and Fedora is working fine without any problems whatsoever. So it does not seem to be a RAM or hardware problem as of now. Please feel free to correct if I am wrong, I am no expert to tell you the truth. Earlier similar problem had happened and I just booted into Safe Mode and kept it running in this mode for 30 mins or so without doing anyhing such as deleting any software or uninstalling any drivers etc. Just kept it completely untouched and then the problem disappeared for good until today. Thanks.

I have persona experiance in the error which u showed. I have 2 rams 1 with 2GB and other with 1GB , when 1 GB ram failed, i got this error. I succeeded in finding the error after i removed 1 GB RAM(i tested in other system too)The problem was from RAM part. When RAM memory crashed u get this type of error(i think ur RAM problem is in intital stages, u will face this permenent problem when whole RAM get spoiled)

Any how this is initial stage enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply, appreciated. I do have 2 different sticks of RAM both being 512 MB DDR (my laptop is 6 years old, purchased in 2005). One is Hynix and other is Nanya. I need to take one of them out and do what you have mentioned. Will let you know the results soon, thanks.

Since my laptop is 6 years old, is it a good idea to increase the RAM to the full capacity of GB? It has two slots where I can insert 2 new 512 MB DDR sticks. My laptop model is Toshiba Equium L10-273. But is DDR RAM still sold in the market?

I have just opened my laptop and taken one RAM stick out and kept the laptop running on another RAM stick although a bit slower than usual for 3-4 hrs without any problems then I did the same with another RAM stick for the same duration and both times there was no problem whatsoever. Then I put both RAM sticks and now the laptop is working fine. No error message whatsoever. I cleaned both RAM sticks with a dry cloth before putting them back. Thanks.

Good as i told u its in initial stage u will not have much problem according to me. May be after 2 yrs u will start facing real problem. Why dont u upgrade to 2GB of RAM?

I have put my friend's RAM in my laptop and again the machine seems to be showing no error like the one I have mentioned in my post. But there seems to be another problem ie my screen flickers for no reason at all. This happens both in Win XP and Fedora (Linux distro). It happens whenever I open a window such as a web broswer like IE o Firefox in Fedora. It also happens when I open icons like My Computer, My Documents etc in Win XP. I have tried to google for the solution and what I have come across often points to a screen/display related problem ie loose cable in the back. Not sure, what should I do? Thanks.
