Hello

Bought a netbook that came pre-installed with Ubuntu 10.04. Now the problem is that there is no icon on the desktop for file browser. I have to plug in a usb and then only the file browser opens up. Also, I can't place any shortcut on desktop. When I try to, there is a shortcut created in the desktop folder within file browser but none on the actual desktop.

This is how my desktop looks like:



The top leftmost icon is not clickable. I am a noob when it comes to linux and am hoping to install Windows 7 starter in a few days. Till then any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated.

your installation looks pretty strange. you are running a pretty old build of ubuntu too. try running software update manager and updating to the latest edition of ubuntu.

I can't find software update or Terminal in the File Browser. Any specific names for them?

Edit: Just read that the OS bundled with the netbook is ubuntu light.
 
Are you running Ubuntu 11.04 and not 10.04? Move the cursor to the left of the screen and a slideable display of the Unity dock would appear. The top icon on that would be the icon for the Home folder, much like the "My Computer" on your windows machine.
 
hah. they loaded a crippled version of ubuntu on your netbook 😕

if the netbook does not have any relevant data, just install ubuntu or any other distro from a pen drive. the installation looks pretty messed up to me because you should have three menu items in the top bar enabling you to access the installed apps on the computer.

terminal can be opened with alt+f2 keyboard shortcut i think. just download the ISO of latest Ubuntu build or any other distro and install it manually!

it does look like unity interface. you are right.

a menu bar should appear if you take the cursor to the very left. or click on the icon at the top left.
 
A menu bar does not appear. I should download a fresh ISO of the regular build and boot using a pen drive.
 

😀 there are tons of distros you can pick from. UbuntuLinux MintElementary OSI have installed Elementary OS on dad's netbook. But I would suggest using Mint though.
 
Mint is essentially Ubuntu with a friendly user interface. It also comes loaded with third party plugins for music and video playing that you have to install in Ubuntu. Any of these OS would work fine. Ubuntu uses Unity by default which is not liked by a lot of people. Linux Mint uses Gnome which should be easier to understand by people used to Windows. Unity is a work in progress and can be avoided for the time being.
 
there is nothing wrong with the install, welcome to linux, open terminal , right click on desktop anywhere you will get the option or hit alt + f2 and copy paste this

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

reboot and you will will fine with menu bar on top side.

btw if have not used linux before and can't be bothered with CLI cmds then go with windows.

edit , you can run update from terminal also

cmd

sudo apt -get update
 
Update:Installed Linux Mint. Everything works except my Tata Photon +. In Network Settings I do get a Mobile Broadband Option after inserting the stick and it detects the IMEI. Have set up the connection - it auto-recognised that I had a Photon. But when I try connecting it attempts to connect before giving an error - "Activation of network connection failed". The stick is activated as I was using it on windows. Any possible solutions?In "Computer" the stick is listed as "Huawei SD Storage" and nothing happens on clicking the icon.
