From 22nd Jan 2012, Tata Docomo Customers Not able to access 3g network if they have done any 2g gprs pack recharge, which they use to get earlier.
If you are not activate any 2G Pack on ur Tata Docomo number then you will able to access 3G Network. I m also using Tata Docomo since last 3 Years. 🙁
Confirmed from Nodal Desk
Official News on the way!!!

But they will be able to access net via EDGE/GPRS and can not notice much difference in speed, becauase latching with 3G network doesn't mean that one will get 3G speed on 2G pack, So I guess it doesn't matter much for 2G data users.

Well, for me this will make a huge difference. I have noticed that whenever I put the card on 3G mode, the signal strength is pretty good at any place inside my home. And the internet speed is always stable at around 110kbps. And when in 2G mode, the signal strength is pretty bad (no signal at all in my living room, but when 3G, the signal is good) and the internet speed fluctuates and never goes beyond 40Kbps, and frequent disconnections too. I wonder why is the change in signal strength while switching from 2G to 3G as I suppose the signal is broadcasted from the same tower, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll be testing this today. If this happens, I'll just break the SIM into two and flush it.

You are correct but signal strength fluctuation is because difference in 2G and 3G frequencies, in my case its just either..I have strong 2G signal but poor 3G at my place.

Damn!!! It doesn't work on 3G mode anymore. Data on Tata Docomo 2G is pathetic at my place. I guess I'll have to find an alternative.

right... But if anybody wants video call facility then... i know outgoing video calls are too costly but incoming toh free hain na. 😉

The major benefit of using 2G pack on tatadocomo's 3G network is the stable speed of 128-132 kbps (and it's very stable)
Under 2G network, the speed might touch 200 kbps sometimes, but a stable speed is always better for browsing.

Correct...May be it defer from tower to tower because I am constantly getting 135kbps in 2G SIM with Huawei UMG1831 Datacard(downloading 500MB with around 16KB speed). No problem at all, but there is no way out to check browsing speed consistency. 🙂

i don't think you have enough knowledge of the difference between 2G & 3G signal. 3G signal means the lower latency. That means at the time you clicked on any link, it starts working from there, it means great stability. While 2G means higher latency (i guess you all are familiar with Aircel, Idea). For me TATA DOCOMO was the only winner in the race of this 2G with the great stability of the network & was stuck with it because i could have been playing online games like zynga poker very well, but now it is also just like any other operator. So quitting TATA DOCOMO with a heavy heart. I have 3 SIM cards which are going to discontinue after 6 months as i am not going to use them anymore. Can anyone suggest me better alternative?

^^ BSNL is better option... I know BSNL capped speed at 128 kbps on 2G data Pack, but if u need approx 256 kbps browsing speed (Downloading speed 35 to 40 kbps) on 3G mode in 2g pack then use bsnllive APN (tested by me) and enter following proxy in ur browser settings.
Proxy Serv. Address 10.220.67.131
Proxy Port Number 8080

This is something new for me. I have a BSNL SIM too, will give it a try.

I guess it is the strategy taken by all the companies, as docomo cutting their 48rs plan from 2GB to 1GB. While others doing the same & now this 3G signal issue. I guess they all want to migrate current 2G users to 3G. If they think they can migrate them to 3G by doing such silly things, they are really DUMBThe step taken by DOCOMO is nothing else but One Step Towards Failure!!!

Best of luck!! u will definitely touch the speed of min. 256kbps max. 512 kbps -1 Mbps.

And one more thing to Note:: This will work for your browser only... (https links, facebook are not working on bsnllive APN)

Oh! That's a downer for me . Do you mean 'Phone Browser'? I wanted to use this SIM on my Huawei Data Card. I guess this is not gonna work then.
